THE BALL – Formula E: Félix da Costa wins in Monaco! (Motorsport)

António Félix da Costa won round seven of the Formula E World Championship, winning in the category for the sixth time (first in Season 7). The Portuguese driver of DS Techeetah, the title champion, outperformed the (much) competition in the fourth edition of Monaco’s ePrix, in the city circuit of Monte Carlo, this year (almost) equal to that of the most famous Grand Prix in Formula 1 (3,320 km instead of the 1,765 km used in the previous three passages of the electric single seater championship in the Principality).

Félix da Costa, in qualifying, was also the fastest in the Super Pole, which gathers the six fastest drivers in the session and arranges the first three lines of the starting grid, achieving the sixth pole position in Formula E. In the race with 45 minutes (one more lap), the Portuguese was always in the lead (or among the men at the front) and secured the victory and the 13th podium in the championship (the second of 2021) only on the last lap of the ePrix, after spectacular overtaking Mitch Evans (Jaguar), braking the curve after the most famous Monte Carlo tunnel.

This result ‘projected’ the Portuguese driver from 14th to fourth in the World Championship. Félix da Costa, with the Super Pole (3 points) and the victory (25), totals 52 points, 10 less than Robin Frijns (Virgin), the second in Monaco, who succeeded compatriot Nyck de Vries (Mercedes-EQ) at the top of the Pilots’ World Championship – the second retired, following the example of teammate Stoffel Vandoorne, and both lost places in the competitive and balanced championship classification.

The next stage of the season, with two ePrix in the program, will take place in Puebla, Mexico, on the 19th and 20th of June.
