Uber & Lucid Motors Forge Autonomous Taxi Alliance
Lucid Gravity SUV to Pioneer Robotaxi Fleet
Uber is set to revolutionize urban transportation with a major partnership with electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid Motors. The collaboration will see Lucid’s luxury Gravity SUV become the backbone of Uber’s expanding autonomous taxi service, aiming to deploy thousands of driverless vehicles globally.
Autonomous Revolution on the Horizon
The ambitious venture plans to introduce the first self-driving Lucid Gravity vehicles to city streets as early as next year. While the initial deployment location remains undisclosed, it is confirmed to be a major US metropolis. Over the next six years, Uber has committed to acquiring a minimum of 20,000, and potentially more, of these advanced electric SUVs.
These vehicles will be equipped with the Nuro Driver Autonomous Driving System, engineered to meet Level 4 autonomy standards. This advanced system allows the cars to operate independently in most driving scenarios, though human oversight may still be required in certain situations.
This partnership marks a significant step towards widespread adoption of autonomous ride-sharing. The global rollout across numerous markets signals a strong commitment from both companies to shape the future of mobility.
Industry Embraces Driverless Future
The move by Uber and Lucid Motors aligns with a broader industry trend. In the US, autonomous vehicle miles traveled have seen a steady increase. For instance, Waymo, a leading competitor, reported over 3 million autonomous miles driven in its most recent operational period in Phoenix and San Francisco.
