Events take place in a world called Valistea, which is studded with Mother Crystals and is divided into six kingdoms. With the help of ether, the inhabitants of the lands invoke magic that allows them to live in comfort and abundance.

The most powerful and deadly creatures of the Valistei – the Akons – live inside their dominants, men or women, who are able to invoke their power. In some countries, dominants are treated like royalty, while in others they are forced to serve as weapons.

One of these, the dominant Phoenix, is Joshua Rosfield, the second son of the Archduke of Rosaria, one of the kingdoms of Valistea. It was believed that his older brother Clive would become the dominant, but when this did not happen, he devoted himself to mastering the blade.

At 15, Clive wins the Ducal Tournament. He was tasked with guarding the Phoenix and blessed with owning a portion of its fire. Clive’s promising career ends in tragedy at the hands of the mysterious dark Akon, Ifrit, so the Archduke’s firstborn takes the path of revenge.
Joshua, in turn, often regrets that it was he who became the dominant of the Phoenix, and not his stronger and braver older brother. However, Joshua, too, finds himself caught up in tragic events that change Clive’s life forever.

Another character in Final Fantasy XVI was Jill Varrick, who was born in the fallen northern territories. Jill was taken away from her homeland at a young age to become the ward of the Rosary, bringing peace between the two warring nations. All this time, she grew up with the sons of the Archduke and now, at 12 years old, she is as much a part of the Rosfields family as Clive and Joshua.
Final Fantasy XVI is officially announced for PlayStation 5 only, but the game is expected to be released on PC as well. The release date is still unknown.
