The association can now buy the Kulturpalast in Werder

The Freundeskreis Scala Kulturpalast has now received a sponsorship check worth 199,000 euros from the city of Werder. With this money, the association can buy the cinema in Eisenbahnstraße and thus preserve the historical cultural location. The purchase price totaling 350,000 euros will be financed with the help of private lenders, the association’s own funds and this municipal grant. The purchase agreement was signed on February 26th.

Renovation is going on

The city’s one-time injection of funds goes back to a resolution by the city council in March 2020. Meanwhile, the renovation work in the cinema, which was built in 1940 and is a listed building, has meanwhile progressed. The reception room has been renovated and refurbished, railings and emergency exits have been renewed and work on the stage area has also begun. All these activities must be coordinated with the monument protection authority.

Power supply needs renovation

According to the city administration, the next major project is the power supply, which urgently needs to be renovated. The cinema is hoping for funding from the federal government’s “Future Program Cinema”, which supports art house cinemas in small towns. On Tuesday, there was financial support from another fund, namely from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg. For “great commitment in the exceptional year 2020”, the cinema was awarded the 23rd Cinema Program Prize, which is associated with a bonus of 15,000 euros. “Above all, I am pleased that the cinema and concert program at Scala can hopefully start again soon,” said Mayor Manuela Saß (CDU) when handing over the check.

Cinema closed since November

Operator Gösta Oelstrom can certainly use this money, because the cinema has been closed since November due to the corona lockdown. He told the MAZ at the beginning of February that the cinema would again have to rely on donations if the mandatory break was extended. The plans for the cultural program this year had to be overturned several times. Gösta Oelstrom spoke of monthly losses in winter of over 12,000 euros.
