The artist, interior designer Nikolai Drozdovsky has gone to eternity

On October 17, the artist, interior designer Nikolajs Drozdovskis (1939 – 2020), passed away, and the portal “Delfi” was informed by the chairman of the Latvian Artists’ Union (LMS) Igors Dobičins. We publish the farewell words of LMS to a colleague.

Farewell to the artist Nikolai Drozdovsky will take place on October 22, at 14.00, in Jurmala, Bulduri Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Nikolai Drozdovsky’s interest in visual art was aroused by the work of a designer-draftsman at the K. Voroshilov Higher School of Aviation Engineering. In 1961, the artist graduated from the Room Decorator-Design Department of the Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts (now PIKC Riga Secondary School of Design and Art (RLMV) Advertising Design Education Program). During his studies, Nikolajs Drozdovskis worked as an artist in the Club for the Cooperation of the Disabled and in the cinemas “Teika”, “Rīga”, where, according to the requirements, the artist’s duties included making monumental banner paintings.

After graduating from RLMV, the Ministry of Culture assigned the artist to work in the cinema “Teika”. From 1962 to 1970, Nikolajs Drozdovskis studied at the newly established Department of Interior and Equipment of the State Academy of Arts of the Latvian SSR (now the functional design sub-branch of the Design Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts) and graduated with a diploma thesis “Cinema Advertising”. He was one of the first academically educated designers in Latvia – the Latvian Academy of Arts, who visited the contemporary trend and development of Latvian interior design. After studying at the Latvian Academy of Arts from 1967 until the liquidation of the company in 1992, Nikolajs Drozdovskis worked at the LMS Art Foundation’s Applied Decorative Combine “Art”.
Participated in the development of interior and design projects for cultural objects and catering establishments: Daugavpils station and Riga Central station buffet interior projects (1969-1972), decorative painting for the cafe “Pink Sails” (Ventspils, 1972), LSSR Museum of Art History and Literature for the exhibition “Soviet Latvian Literature “(1970), etc. Rigans are familiar with the artist ‘s metal letter compositions of cinema names” Teika “,” Jugla “,” Daile “in the decorations of building facades, which were also illuminated.

The artist has participated in exhibitions since 1969. Organized exhibitions in Latvia and the Czech Republic, as well as participated in many group exhibitions in Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, France, the Czech Republic. Nikolai Drozdovsky received the Masarika Academy of Arts Award (Czech Republic) in 2003 and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in 2007.

Nikolai Drozdovsky has been a member of the LMS Young Artists’ Association since 1971. The artist has been a member of the Latvian Artists’ Union since 1973. Artists Rolands Beitners (1917-2006), Aleksandrs Stankevičs (1932-2015), Vladimirs Bekmanis gave him recommendations to join the society.

The author used pastel, watercolor, acrylic and mixed techniques in his creative work. He also created graphics, posters, interior projects and realized them.

Nikolai Drozdovsky’s works are in the Museum of the Latvian Artists’ Union, Jurmala City Museum, as well as in many private collections in Latvia, the Czech Republic, the USA, Canada, France, Belgium, Finland, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, etc.
