The Amancio Ortega Foundation has recovered its scholarship program in the United States and Canada. The pandemic forced the early return of students who were studying the 2019/20 academic year in those countries. And those who had obtained the scholarship for the 2020/21 academic year could not enjoy this experience either.

When the pandemic is being controlled in many countries, the Amancio Ortega Foundation has recovered its scholarship program. Those interested can request to participate in the selection until October 27, through the
Foundation websiteHowever, if there are health or other circumstances that make it advisable, the Amancio Ortega Foundation could decide to completely cancel the program in its 2022/23 edition.

The scholarship that the 400 beneficiaries will receive covers 100% of the cost of a school year in Canada or the United States: accommodation and meals in a local host family, schooling, travel, medical and accident insurance, training prior to the start of the course and follow-up during the ten months of stay abroad. The academic requirements to participate in the selection process are a minimum average grade of 7 in 3rd year of ESO and a minimum grade of 7 in the English subject. The family income of each student is also a fundamental element in the evaluation of the applications, since this criterion represents 60% of the score associated with each file.

In the 2019/20 academic year, a score of young people from Malaga were enjoying this scholarship when the advance of the pandemic advised their return. 13 were studying in institutes in the United States and 7 in Canada. In previous editions, 100 scholarships were awarded to Galician students and 500 to the rest of Spain. In this edition, 70 are reserved for centers in Galicia and 330 for the rest of the communities.

For the 2020/21 academic year, 23 young people from Malaga had been selected, who were also unable to travel to these North American countries to study. And the call for this 2021/22 academic year was directly suspended by the organization, given the uncertainty about the health and mobility conditions that existed at the end of last year, which is when the student selection process begins.

Since its inception, more than 3,500 students have participated in the program, managing not only to perfect their command of the English language, but also to acquire new skills and competencies. In order to promote complete immersion in the destination countries -both with extensive experience in welcoming international students- and to promote the learning of English, the program’s scholarship recipients live with a host family and go to local educational centers, in the spirit of offering a total integration process. The participants thus live a unique experience, in which they acquire new knowledge and develop their personal and academic abilities.
