the 5 changes authorized for the 2020/2021 season

For the championships having resumed their rights after the forced interruption linked to the coronavirus crisis, FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) had authorized the teams to make five replacements instead of the usual three. A measure intended to preserve the physical condition of players forced to make up for repeated matches in a fairly short period of time. Today, the governing body of world football has announced that this measure may also apply throughout the 2020/2021 season.

“On the sidelines of the decision taken on May 8 to offer competitions scheduled to end in 2020 the possibility of authorizing up to five replacements per team, the board of directors of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) had decided to examine the option of extending this measure to the year 2021. On the basis of this in-depth analysis, including consultations with stakeholders and a study on the impact of Covid-19 on the competition calendars, the IFAB Board of Directors has extended this possibility to competitions that must end before July 31, 2021 and to international competitions scheduled for July-August 2021. (…) No editorial change is made to the temporary amendment of Laws of the Game, which allows up to five replacements per team. However, to avoid interrupting the game excessively, each team will only have three opportunities to make these replacements, those made at half-time are not counted for this purpose. (…) The decision whether or not to apply this temporary amendment rests exclusively with each competition organizer ”, can we read on the press release.
