The 27 ” iMac all naked | MacGeneration

The tinkerers ofiFixit received their new 27 inch iMac and of course, impossible for them not to play with the knife to find out what is behind this machine. This is all the more symbolic as it will undoubtedly be the last Intel representative of the all-in-one range. From this disassembly in order, there is not much more to remember the one made yesterday by OWC (read: The lack of hard drive leaves a big void inside the iMac 27 “of 2020). If not a nice x-ray shot of the machine that confirms that it is a box full of empty:

iFixit confirms that it is possible to change the RAM modules by removing the hatch at the back. Will we be able to do the same for the future iMac Apple Silicon? Among the internal disappointments of this new iMac, the wireless card is now soldered to the motherboard. It’s not the end of the world, but we would like to know the reason why Apple decided to modify this element which will make repairs more expensive.

The T2 chip takes center stage on the motherboard, and just behind the RAM module socket is the CPU attached to a socket LGA1200. This component was introduced in the spring by Intel for the Comet Lake CPUs, as is the case for the 10th generation Core i5 / i7 / i9 (optional) of these iMacs. Hypothetically, this socket would allow chip replacement in case of problem, it could even according iFixit welcome more powerful CPUs, but we have the feeling that this will not be possible with Apple.

Unfortunately, the site has purchased an entry-level 256 GB iMac. We therefore do not see the famous second slot on the motherboard present on the 4 and 8 TB configurations. iFixit suspects the possibility that this is a location for storage expansion, but OWC explained that you cannot add a module yourself.

The 27-inch iMac gets a repairability rating of 4 out of 10, which is good but not great. Among the concerns raised, the disassembly of the machine is always complicated, and there is no way to improve the internal storage (read: iMac 27 “2020: SSDs arrive soldered).
