The December 4 (2022) episode of NHK historical drama “Kamakura-dono no Thirteen” was “The 46th Shogun became a woman”. Mr. Bushido, who runs the popular historical commentary video “Sengoku BANASHI” with more than 130,000 subscribers, what was the “key point” you wanted to talk about most passionately in the commentary video “46th”?

I will explain again according to the content of the video. Please use it for preparation and review to enjoy the next broadcast more. (There are spoilers)

In the drama, Tokimoto’s mother Mii is seduced…

No, turbulent times. Hi, I’m Mr. Bushido, a YouTuber who loves history. This time too we will give a historical commentary according to the content of the Taiga drama.

13 Kamakura-dono 46th “Shogun ni Natta Onna” depicts Masako becoming “Ama Shogun” to control the chaos of the shogunate after Sanetomo’s death.

To decide the next Kamakura-dono, Yoshitoki Hojo and retired Emperor Gotoba are in a tug of war.

In the drama, Tokimoto’s mother Jitsue was tempted by Yoshimura Miura to agitate Tokimoto, and furthermore, Yoshimura Miura was connected to Yoshitoki Hojo behind the scenes.

There is no detailed description of Ano Tokimoto’s raising an army in “Azuma Kagami”.

Tokimoto received a decree (an order from the emperor) and attempted to rule the eastern part of Japan, but Yoshitoki HOJO sent his retainers, including Yukichika KANAKUBO, to suppress the plan. On February 23, 1219, less than a month after Sanetomo’s assassination, Tokimoto was surrounded by an army to hunt him down and kill himself.

Azuma Kagamigami’s Ano Tokimoto Rebellion is too simple, but there is no record of the process that led to this incident or of Tokimoto’s mother, Awa no Tsubone (Jitsue in the drama).

Some researchers believe that Tokimoto was suspected of rebellion and killed while preparing armaments because he felt his life was in danger.

Tokimoto’s father, Zenjo ANO, was also suspected of rebellion and executed, but likewise the details are unknown. It is possible that the blood of Genji, grandson of Yoritomo, was considered dangerous by Hojo.

Although not depicted in the drama, Zengyo (Kugyo’s younger brother), also a descendant of Genji, was killed on the orders of Hojo Yoshitoki.

Punishment for deafness

Although it is unrecorded, there was a scene in the play where after Ano Tokimoto committed suicide, Tokimoto’s mother Jitsui also came under suspicion, and the Hojo clan argued over punishment.

Among them, Yoshitoki, the regent, insisted that he be severely punished because he was a kinsman, and a fearsome proposal was made to “cut off his ears and nose and exile him.”

There must have been a lot of viewers who thought that Oe (Hiromoto), who immediately came up with such a terrible proposition, and Yoshitoki, who tried to adopt it, were incredible people.

However, it seems that in the Middle Ages the punishment of cutting off ears and noses was by no means uncommon. Among the thirteen members of Kamakura-dono, Munechika Maki (Riku’s older brother), who assisted in the beating of Masako’s second wife, was punished by having his forelock cut off.

This was done because the death penalty was too heavy a punishment for the parent of the family, but an equivalent heavy punishment should be given. For a samurai, not having a forelock was truly a sin. However, since women do not have a topknot, it seems that the cutting of ears and noses was carried out as a punishment equivalent to the death penalty.

Sounds like an overly cruel punishment, but people at the time thought it was better than death. Of course, I don’t think he would have liked to have his ears and nose cut off…

There was common sense in the Middle Ages that is difficult for modern people to understand.

Well, that’s all for this article. For more detailed commentary on the drama, check out the Sengoku BANASHI YouTube channel. I’ll see you next week. Goodbye!
