Rossiyskaya Gazeta presented its traditional rating of the cheapest new cars on the Russian market in 2022. The previous ranking of the edition of the Top 10 affordable cars in Russia was compiled in November 2020. Since then, prices in the country have risen significantly. Among the reasons are shortage of components, problems with logistics, inflation, updates in the model ranges of manufacturers.
As of January 2022, the top 10 cheapest cars on the Russian car market look like this:
1. Lada Granta sedan – 598,900 rubles (BGN 13,492 in the BNB cruise – 44.39 rubles for one lev, note);
2. liftback Lada Granta – 620,900 rubles (BGN 13,987);
3. Lada Granta station wagon – 624,900 rubles (14,077 levs);
4. Lada Granta hatchback – 649,500 rubles (BGN 14,632);
5. SUV Lada Niva Legend – 693,900 rubles (15,632);
6. Renault Logan sedan – 762,000 rubles (BGN 17,166);
7. Lada Xray hatchback – 826,900 rubles (BGN 18,628);
8. Lada Largus station wagon – 829,900 rubles (BGN 18,695);
9. Chevrolet Nexia sedan – 850,900 rubles (BGN 19,168);
10. Lada Vesta sedan – 862,900 rubles (BGN 19,439).
As you can see, most of the cars in the ranking are manufactured by the Russian company AvtoVAZ, part of the Renault group.

Since the last publication of the rating, the composition of the top ten has changed. Despite the sharp rise in prices, the Lada Granta is still the cheapest car in Russia. The most expensive in the family of this model is already a hatchback, its minimum configuration is Classic, while for the rest Granta is Standard.
The hatchback and sedan Datsun, which previously ranked fifth and sixth, have disappeared from the rankings, production of cars of this brand in Russia has been suspended.
Now Granta is followed by another Lada – Niva Legend. This car is still the most affordable new SUV in Russia.
Sixth place is occupied by Renault Logan, which previously closed the top ten. Prices for this model have not increased as much as those of competitors. But the hatchback with the same platform Renault Sandero was not included in the ranking, now more expensive equipment Life is considered the basis for this model (previously there was Access).
The prices of the hatchback Lada Xray and the station wagon Lada Largus have increased significantly since the last publication of the rating (by 173 and 184 thousand rubles, respectively). For Largus, this can still be explained by the deep modernization of the model, which took place last year. But Xray has not undergone such large-scale updates. In addition, it is hardly worth relying on a successor to this model or a major upgrade, its demand is not very high.
The only representative of the Chevrolet brand is in ninth place, with its most affordable model Nexia. This car has nothing to do with the well-known Nexia – in fact it is a modernized Aveo. Maybe other cheap models – Cobalt or Spark – will enter the next rating.
Closes the top ten other Lada – Lada Vesta sedan. Despite the price increase and the initially higher price, the Vesta became the best-selling car in Russia in 2021, displacing the Granta from first place.
If there were twelve places in the rankings, then the hatchback Renault Sandero worth 869,000 rubles would be in 11th place. And the 12th place will be taken by another Lada model – the Niva Travel SUV. Whether these models will enter the next ranking of the cheapest new cars in Russia, only time will tell, the publication concludes.
