Surprisingly high voter turnout in Winterthur city council elections:

The election of a replacement for the resigning Barbara Günthard-Maier moves the people of Winterthur. The turnout was higher on the Friday before the elections than with the last year’s replacement election.

+++

The initial situation:

The green liberals are trying for the seventh time to make the leap to the Winterthur city council. They have never succeeded in doing this before. This time the chances are actually better than already. On the one hand, the party benefits from the green wave. The GLP outstripped the FDP in the National Council elections last October. However, the FDP holds more seats than the GLP in the Winterthur City Council.

The gender issue is also an issue. Should FDP candidate Urs Hofer be elected, Christa Meier (SP) would be the only woman on the Winterthur city council. Hofer’s chances, on the other hand, are strengthened by his attitude. In view of the left-green majority in the city council, a clear bourgeois representation should definitely have a chance.

The resignation

On April 29, 2020, the Winterthur FDP city councilor Barbara Günthard-Maier informed the media about her resignation. The head of the Department for Safety and Environment is moving to the federal government after eight years on the Winterthur City Council. There she devotes herself to a new position at the FDFA. The FDP presented its candidate Urs Hofer on the same day. This is to defend the vacated seat for the FDP. He is challenged by the green liberals. They want to conquer the seat with Katrin Cometta. It is already the seventh attempt by the GLP for a seat on the Winterthur city council.

The candidates have to vote in the run-up to the elections TOP POLIT PODIUM met.
