Thais are Asia’s biggest beer drinkers


A recent survey found that Thais are the biggest beer drinkers in Asia, while the Czechs are number one in the world.

According to this year’s World Beer Index published on expensivity.com, Thais consume an average of 142 bottles of beer per person per year, followed by South Koreans who consume 130 bottles per person per year.

In the world rankings, the Czechs consume an average of 468 bottles of beer per person per year, followed by the Spaniards with 417 bottles, while Germany comes third with 411 bottles, despite its famous annual beer festival, the Oktoberfest.

Globally, Germans are the biggest spenders, with their per capita spending on beer of 1,600 euros, followed by Poland (1,458 euros), Lithuania (1,330 euros), Austria and the United Kingdom (1,300 euros).

In Asia, the five most expensive countries for beer are China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

The average beer price in Thailand is higher than in Amsterdam, Berlin and Washington

The average price of beer is higher in Bangkok than in Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Brussels and Berlin.

According to World Beer Index 2021, the average price of a 330 ml bottle of beer in Bangkok is 4.5 euros, or about 149 baht.

The World Beer Index has calculated the average price of a bottle of beer in 58 countries purchased from a supermarket or hotel bar.

Thailand – and specifically Bangkok – is ranked 37th with prices ranging from 0.79 euros (29 baht) in supermarkets to 7.30 euros (269 baht) in hotel bars.

Of the other ASEAN countries that participated in the study, only Singapore was found to be more expensive than Thailand, with the average price of a beer being 4.34 euros.

Next come Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur – 3.98 euros), the Philippines (Manila – 4 euros) and Indonesia (Jakarta – 2.66 euros).

The study has a few notable exceptions, such as Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.
