Thailand, the war of the concubines: sexually explicit photos of the king’s favorite have been released

BANGKOK – The dissemination of “explicit” photos of the royal consort Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi it would be the consequence of a power struggle between the female figures who gravitate around the king of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Last August a freelance journalist specializing in news related to the Thai royal court, Andrew MacGregor Marshall, announced that it had obtained a USB stick containing around 1,400 images apparently from Sineenat’s private iPhones. The reporter said dozens of photos are “sexually explicit”, and would shortly precede King Maha’s decision to return the titles she had been deprived of in October 2019 to her spouse.

Marshall stated that the photos were given to him by unknown “pro-democratic hackers”, but he said he was skeptical about the real provenance of the material: according to him, the disclosure of the photos is the result of a palace intrigue: the return to court of Sineenat would in fact be “bitterly opposed” by the palace factions close to Queen Suthida and Princess Bajrakitiyabha.

Last September in the overheated climate of Thailand pervaded by student rebellions, the 68-year-old ruler had indeed rehabilitated his number one concubine Sineenat – said Koi and who from a nurse had become an airplane pilot and her personal bodyguard – freeing her from the prison where she was locked up since October 2019 on charges of treachery, to get her out of the kingdom aboard a private plane and reach the harem of about 20 young female soldiers-lovers of personal bodyguards in Germany, all housed on the fourth and top floor of the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl in the tourist resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. No official reasons for “forgiveness” had been given.

The fall from grace of Sineenat, kept locked up according to the image in a penitentiary for death row inmates and according to other sources in a super-supervised “normal” prison, it seemed irreversible since the details of the “affair” had been publicly disclosed. The Royal Gazette in fact wrote that the sovereign had stripped her of the title of “Chao Khun Phra”, or Noble Consort granted to her just three months earlier on her 67th birthday. The photos of the ceremony and his prostration at the king’s feet had gone around the world as the fourth wife stood impassively from the throne.

The rehabilitation had created havoc in the palace and in the turbulent love life of the Thai king who separated without second thoughts from his three previous wives. The first, with whom he had a son, never accepted a divorce and continues to attend numerous ceremonies as an effective member of the royal house; the second is a former actress who gave him five children and now lives in America with the 4 boys who – except for the girl, who is accepted at court – are forbidden to enter the kingdom. The third, Srirasmi Suwadee, mother of a child who lives alone outside Thailand in a hotel not far from his father’s, is said to be interned in a secret location according to German press sources, living as a nun without being able to receive visitors.
