Following two days of intense crisis, the Ministry of Ecological Transition announced a “compromise solution” on the evening of Thursday,July 17,between stakeholders in the textile and shoe collection, sorting, and recycling sector. Emergency aid is slated for release in August.
On Tuesday, July 15, several tons of second-hand clothing were strewn across the parking lots of Decathlon and Kiabi stores in Houdemont (Meurthe-et-Moselle), Saint-Herblain (Loire-Atlantique), and Abbeville (somme). This “wake-up call” action was claimed by companies within the Le Relais network, which simultaneously suspended textile and shoe collections from their 22,309 containers across France. The move aimed to highlight the dire financial straits of all collection and sorting structures, which are described as being “on the verge of collapse.”
“We are not going to let ourselves perish without speaking out,” stated Emmanuel Pilloy, President of relais France, which handles over 60% of sorting capacities. “We are heading towards a certain short-term collapse.” The entire sector, encompassing 3,000 jobs, including 2,000 in France, and many individuals in integration programs, is at risk.”These are people who were receiving social assistance, who not only found dignity through this work but also serve the community. Our disappearance would represent a significant social cost,” he emphasized.
