Text With Jesus AI chatbot grows rapidly despite blasphemy criticism

AI ‘jesus’ ⁢Chatbot Gains Traction Despite Blasphemy Concerns

NEW YORK ‍A new‍ artificial intelligence chatbot, “Text With Jesus,” is rapidly gaining users despite sparking controversy⁤ and accusations of blasphemy from some religious leaders. The app, developed by Catloaf Software, offers daily Bible scripture and AI-generated ⁣responses designed to help users apply ⁤biblical verses to‌ their daily lives.

Launched in late 2023, Text With Jesus is part of a growing trend of faith-based AI tools, including Deen Buddy for Islam and⁢ AI ‌Buddha. The app⁢ allows users to text questions and receive responses‌ framed as if coming from Jesus, and even features a “Satan” persona ‌for exploring opposing ⁢viewpoints.

While boasting a 4.7 ⁣rating on the Apple App Store with over 2,700⁢ reviews, the app has drawn sharp criticism. Ken‍ Weliever, a minister writing for The PreachersWord, questioned the accuracy of an AI “Jesus,” citing examples of responses regarding same-sex‍ marriage accompanied by rainbow emojis and expressing concern over the app’s “Satan” feature.⁢

“I would⁢ just open my Bible‍ and ‍read it for ‍myself,” Weliever ‍wrote in a December 2023 ‌essay.

James Spencer, President of the Moody Center, echoed⁣ these concerns‍ in‌ The Christian Post, stating the AI⁣ “Jesus”⁤ appeared “less ⁤concerned with fulfilling the Law and the‍ Prophets then providing answers palatable to ⁢the itching ears of‍ 21st century users.”

The Vatican has also cautioned against over-reliance on AI for spiritual⁣ guidance. In June, Pope Leo⁢ XIV ⁣acknowledged artificial intelligence ⁢as‍ an “exceptional product of ‍human genius,” but emphasized‍ it remains “above all else, a tool,” ‌warning against confusing data access with genuine intelligence.

Despite the backlash, app creator Stefan Peter maintains the app’s purpose is ⁤not to replace ⁤conventional faith practices. “AI can’t replace lived faith, community or the human touch of ministry,” Peter told FOX Business. “But⁣ it can definitely help lower barriers and spark deeper curiosity.”
