AI ‘jesus’ Chatbot Gains Traction Despite Blasphemy Concerns
NEW YORK – A new artificial intelligence chatbot, “Text With Jesus,” is rapidly gaining users despite sparking controversy and accusations of blasphemy from some religious leaders. The app, developed by Catloaf Software, offers daily Bible scripture and AI-generated responses designed to help users apply biblical verses to their daily lives.
Launched in late 2023, Text With Jesus is part of a growing trend of faith-based AI tools, including Deen Buddy for Islam and AI Buddha. The app allows users to text questions and receive responses framed as if coming from Jesus, and even features a “Satan” persona for exploring opposing viewpoints.
While boasting a 4.7 rating on the Apple App Store with over 2,700 reviews, the app has drawn sharp criticism. Ken Weliever, a minister writing for The PreachersWord, questioned the accuracy of an AI “Jesus,” citing examples of responses regarding same-sex marriage accompanied by rainbow emojis and expressing concern over the app’s “Satan” feature.
“I would just open my Bible and read it for myself,” Weliever wrote in a December 2023 essay.
James Spencer, President of the Moody Center, echoed these concerns in The Christian Post, stating the AI “Jesus” appeared “less concerned with fulfilling the Law and the Prophets then providing answers palatable to the itching ears of 21st century users.”
The Vatican has also cautioned against over-reliance on AI for spiritual guidance. In June, Pope Leo XIV acknowledged artificial intelligence as an “exceptional product of human genius,” but emphasized it remains “above all else, a tool,” warning against confusing data access with genuine intelligence.
Despite the backlash, app creator Stefan Peter maintains the app’s purpose is not to replace conventional faith practices. “AI can’t replace lived faith, community or the human touch of ministry,” Peter told FOX Business. “But it can definitely help lower barriers and spark deeper curiosity.”
