Texas court rejects request for annulment of 127,000 votes

The Texas Supreme Court rejected a Republican-led petition to overturn nearly 127,000 ballot papers distributed in the Houston area and where people voted for their cars.

The state Supreme Court, led by Republicans, rejected the request of Republican Party activists without giving an explanation. The issue of ballot papers is yet to be considered at an emergency hearing at the Federal Court on Monday.

Conservative activists in Texas opposed the liberalization of polling stations in Harris County (Houston is the county seat and largest city in the county), where a record 1.4 million votes cast for Tuesday’s presidential election was already recorded in the United States of America (USA).

The county is the nation’s third largest and a crucial “battleground” in Texas for Democrats and Republicans in elections.

Republicans are now focused on Monday’s decision by district judge Andrew Hanen, having filed a “battery” of legal challenges in this case over measures to increase voting options during the covid-19 pandemic.

President Donald Trump, a candidate for a new term, won in Texas in 2016, but polls now indicate that Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate, may win in the state.

Harris County has made available to voters 10 locations (called “drive-thru”) where the nearly five million inhabitants can vote for their cars, without having to go inside the polling centers and thus prevent the spread of the new coronavirus .

The Supreme Court dismissed an identical lawsuit last month.

Texas is one of five US states that did not allow a widespread postal vote in the time of the 19 covid pandemic, which has killed more than 18,000 people across the state.

However, the voting period was brought forward, so more than 9.7 million people have already voted in advance. Analysts predict a turnout of more than 12 million, with the state of Texas having the highest abstentions in the US as a rule.
