Tested on myself: how to get vaccinated against COVID-19 in Dnipro

The situation with the coronavirus in Ukraine leaves much to be desired. Every day about 300 people die from this disease in the country, 13 regions of Ukraine are in the “red” zone, the Ministry of Health encourages citizens to keep their distance, wear masks and avoid crowded places. Meanwhile, the pace of vaccination among residents is not encouraging: not only have few vaccines been delivered, but also the level of refusal from them among the population is quite high.

Head of the media center Informant managed to get vaccinated against the coronavirus, and today we will tell you what you need to do to get vaccinated, and what side effects you can expect.

First of all, in order to get vaccinated, you need to have a declaration with your family doctor. It can be either a doctor from a private clinic or a public one. If you have not yet concluded a declaration, then by this link you can see all the doctors and choose the one who still has free places for the conclusion of declarations. If you have already concluded the declaration, then contact your family doctor and declare your desire to receive the vaccine.

Now they vaccinate mainly those who are at risk: 80+ people, doctors, military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, employees of nursing homes, social workers, employees of the State Emergencies Service, the National Police, the National Guard, the Security Service of Ukraine, teachers, and prisoners. However, some people from the listed risk groups refuse vaccination, which leads to the appearance of vaccine residues. One ampoule of AstraZeneca vaccine (which is supplied to Ukraine under the name Covishield) contains 10 doses of the vaccine – they must be used within 6 hours after opening the ampoule, otherwise the drug will have to be disposed of. In this regard, the Minister of Health of Ukraine Maxim Stepanov signed an order, according to which such vaccine residues can be used to vaccinate people of the following categories:

  • ATO / OOS veterans;
  • People’s Deputies of Ukraine, heads of central executive bodies, regional state administrations, regional councils, local governments, leaders and representatives of religious organizations;
  • Priests;
  • Outstanding writers, journalists, athletes, musicians, actors, and other cultural figures who have turned 60 years old.

This is what the official priority of vaccination in Ukraine looks like now. In practice, sometimes there are so many doses of Covishield left that not only people from official risk groups are vaccinated, but in general everyone who has expressed a desire to get vaccinated.

It happens like this: the day before the opportunity to receive the vaccine, or right on the day of vaccination, the patient receives a call from his family doctor and offers this opportunity. If the patient agrees, he is told the place and time of vaccination, and also warned that he will need to come with a passport to confirm his identity.

“My family doctor called me the day before vaccination and said that there is one vacant dose of Covishield, which is not an applicant, and I can get vaccinated if I want. Of course, I agreed – and I was included in the lists that the family doctor submitted to the state hospital. They called me back from the hospital in a couple of minutes, they said the address was st. Batumi, 13, (City Clinical Hospital No. 6), the time I need to drive up to is 12.00, and they warned me to take my documents with me, ”said Anastasia Zolotareva, head of the media center Informant.

Upon arrival at the hospital for vaccination, patients are asked to fill out a small document – consent to the processing of personal data. After that, you can proceed directly to another office, where the doctor will deliver the vaccination itself.

“The vaccination itself is practically painless – the injection lasts a few seconds and is practically not felt. After vaccination, doctors ask to sit in the lobby of the hospital for about half an hour to check the patient’s condition (in extremely rare cases, patients may experience an allergic reaction after taking any drug, including after an injection of the vaccine). Then you can safely go home and wait for the next stage – the second dose of the vaccine, which, according to various sources, must be obtained in the period from four weeks to three months after the first dose, ”says Anastasia Zolotareva.

The side effects of vaccination, which are seen in a large number of patients and are considered a normal reaction to the vaccine, meaning that the vaccinated person develops immunity, are as follows:

  1. Redness, pain, slight swelling at the injection site;
  2. fever or chills;
  3. headache, muscle, joint, or abdominal pain;
  4. enlarged lymph nodes;
  5. nausea;
  6. fatigue;
  7. insomnia;
  8. dizziness.

Vaccinated people often have one or more reactions to the vaccine that do not last long. “My reaction to the vaccine was as follows: 12 hours after vaccination, the temperature rose to 38 ° C, chills began, and my arm hurt at the injection site. About an hour after the start of this reaction, I managed to fall asleep, and in the morning I already felt great. From the reactions remained pain in the arm, which disappeared completely on the third day after vaccination, ”says the head of the media center Informator.

Important: if a person has already had a coronavirus, this does not mean that he does not need to be vaccinated. Antibodies formed as a result of the disease most often disappear in the next six months, so doctors recommend vaccinating people at risk 6 months after the illness.
