Test results for nursing homes are boosting figures: 340 ni … (Hasselt)

Hasselt –

Because the results of the compulsory tests in the residential care centers have been settled, a new peak in daily corona figures has arisen. In Limburg, 340 new infections are added and the total comes to 4,149 confirmed infections.

The 340 new cases bring the Limburg total to 4,149 confirmed infections. That is a huge increase, but it is perfectly explainable because the results of the thousands of tests of the past few days in residential care centers have been included in this. Due to this increase – which applies to the entire country, by the way – Limburg remains the province with the highest infection rate (48 cases per 10,000 inhabitants). As is known, the other Flemish provinces are much lower: Antwerp (23 per 10,000 inhabitants), Flemish Brabant (31), West Flanders (32) and East Flanders (27).

In rest homes, 17 percent are infected

In our country, there are currently 33,573 confirmed infections after an additional 2,454 people tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday. Here too, the results of the large-scale tests in residential care centers are the cause. 13,434 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours, of which 10,871 were in residential care centers. It showed that 17 percent of residents and staff are infected with the virus.

In the past 24 hours, 283 corona deaths have also been counted: 179 in residential care centers and 103 in hospitals and one more unknown. Since the outbreak of the virus, 4,440 people have already died of the disease in our country. The largest share of deaths still comes from hospitals (2,252 cases or 51%), but rest homes are getting closer (2,029 cases or 46%), the other percentages are home deaths or the location is unknown.

Of the deceased hospital patients, it is certain that corona is the cause of death. Rest homes involve a very small number of cases confirmed by a laboratory (63). The majority of the deceased are suspected cases (1,966). This means that a deceased resident did carry the virus, but it is not certain whether that was also the cause of death. After all, many people are carriers of the virus without showing any symptoms. It is because our country counts everything that Belgium scores high in mortality rates compared to other countries in the world.

More and more hospital leavers

The situation in Belgian hospitals is stabilizing, the figures show. “That is positive, but the reality is that a lot of virus is still circulating in the population. So it has not disappeared yet. When we lose discipline, the virus flares up again and we get new peaks, ”warns virologist Steven Van Gucht.

Let’s start with the positive news: 239 patients were allowed to leave the hospital in the past 24 hours, 78 more than the day before. In total, 7,107 patients have now been discharged in Belgium.

However, there were also 250 new admissions to Belgian hospitals. In total, 5,524 (-12) beds are still occupied. 22 patients were allowed to leave intensive care, but 1,204 people still remain. In total, 889 (-26) of them must be ventilated.

New call for solidarity

During the daily press conference, Yves Stevens of the National Crisis Center emphasized the importance of solidarity. “We notice a degree of annoyance. People who do not apply the measures correctly rightly create a sense of incomprehension among people who do their utmost. Police forces are currently making enforcement efforts on the ground. But it is not the police who have the ultimate responsibility, we are ourselves. By engaging in the correct behavior, we ensure that the virus cannot spread further. We understand that many people are struggling, but don’t let the behavior of others be an excuse to celebrate the reins, otherwise our efforts over the past few weeks will be in vain. The situation is very difficult in hospitals, but it is still manageable. We have to keep it that way. ”
