In the second test match against the USA in the space of three days, the German footballers want to put the world champions under a lot.
“We will try again to demand everything from the United States and it will be the other way around,” said national team coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg ahead of Sunday’s game (23:05 CET, ARD live stream) in the 25,000-seat arena in Harrison near New York. The runners-up European champions won their first duel on Thursday 2-1 in Fort Lauderdale thanks to a late goal from Paulina Krumbiegel.
“I think many spectators will return. We have noticed that many have seen our first game and are full of respect,” said Voss-Tecklenburg. The 54-year-old will take advantage of her 26-man squad: “Now it’s important to include players who haven’t played since the beginning.”
Waiting for the match in New York
It is unclear whether substitute goalkeepers Almuth Schult (Angel City FC) or Ann-Katrin Berger (FC Chelsea) will have the chance to replace starting goalkeeper Merle Frohms (VfL Wolfsburg). Melissa Kössler from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Janina Minge from SC Freiburg could make their debuts in the DFB selection.
“Obviously it’s also something special to play here in New York. That’s why we are now fully concentrated and can’t wait for the second match against the USA,” emphasized the national coach. The two meetings serve as preparation for the World Cup from 20 July to 20 August 2023 in Australia and New Zealand. There, Germany meet Morocco, Colombia and South Korea in the preliminary round.
