Test DS 3 Crossback E-Tense: Better range

DS is the sister brand to French Citroën and will offer some extra premium feel, without it costing the shirt. Basically a smart idea. Norwegians are happy to have a little extra luxury in everyday life.

DS 3 Crossback is an electric, compact and slightly crossover-like car – with some design features that give it a distinctive character. In addition, a starting price of just under 300,000 kroner.

Basically a recipe that should hit well in the electric car country, Norway. Now it has also received an upgrade, which will make it more relevant.

No bestseller

A vitamin injection is needed, because sales are slow. Since January 2021, 140 DS 3 Crossback E-Tense have been registered in Norway. 29 of these have been sold during the first four months of the year.

In comparison, over 2,100 have bought the Citroën e-C4. These two cars have a lot in common.

So why are there such large discrepancies? We will try to find out ….

This is a card test. This means that we have run this model before. Now we try it with another engine. You will find a more thorough test of this model her.

The distinctive “bend” on the shoulder line around the B-pillar is not as popular with everyone. But the design in general gets a thumbs up.

What is new:

The test car is a Performance Line version. This means, among other things, sports seats, 18 “black rims – and extensive use of alcantara and red contrasting seams. The latter include on the dashboard and at the top of the doors.

In addition, the range has improved somewhat since the last time we drove the DS 3 Crossback. Here you have now 341 kilometers measured, according to the WLTP method.

Adaptive cruise control is still optional – but is part of a safety package that costs only 5,500 kroner. So then it’s not that bad.

In addition, the car is equipped with most things as standard in the Performance Line version. The only additions to the test car are the red paint and black roof (NOK 6,500), the previously mentioned safety package (NOK 5,500) and the head up display (NOK 5,500). Then it ends up at 349,500 kroner.

The interior of the Performance Line is sporty. But the driving characteristics do not follow up. On the other hand, you have a full 17 cm ground clearance.

How does it work?

With some software improvements – the range has increased from 320 to 341 kilometers. Not that it has much to say, except for the times you are missing around 20 kilometers to get all the way, of course.

Stated average consumption of 14.7 kWt per 100 kilometers we can not recreate – even under fairly ideal conditions.

We end up at 15.5 kWt when we take the test track of 100 kilometers, with different road types, both small roads and highways. We follow the speed limits (do not drive slowly to save energy), it is dry on the road and around 15 degrees – and we use the normal driving program (not the saving program).

But if you are a little careful, it should not be impossible to reach the range on a normal summer day.

The car can charge up to 100 kWt. It’s not all the world, but with a small battery like it is here, at 50 kWt, you can still charge from 20-80 percent in half an hour, under completely optimal conditions.

Our tests indicate around 20-24 kWt in 20 minutes fast charging. And you usually only need to charge 10-15 minutes to get enough power to get ahead. Then also the charging is usually most efficient.

Space is very limited in the back seat – and the luggage compartment is not particularly large either. Here are better options to choose from. Peugeot e-2008, for example.

With 136 horsepower, the DS-3 is no race car. 0-100 km / h in 9.8 seconds is quite “slack”. But the nice thing about electric cars, where you get the torque right from the start, is that up to around 50-60 km / h it feels cool. Unless you put it in the savings program Eco – then the effect is reduced so much that it simply feels underpowered.

The driving characteristics lean heavily towards comfort, even with the sporty name Performance Line. You also have good ground clearance, which some will appreciate – and the noise level is pleasantly low.

PS: If you buy DS, you also get a little extra service in the form of free tire hotel for three years, including tire change, dedicated DS advisor available 24 hours a day, 24 hour road service and always a replacement car in case of downtime (for whatever reason).

The car for you if?

You like to stand out a little

Not the car for you if?

You need a lot of space

No luggage compartment in front and only 350 liters available here. DS 3 Crossback is not a place master.

Conclusion:

DS 3 is not the biggest, cheapest and at least not the fastest. For example, the Citroën e-C4 is less expensive, has significantly better space in both the rear seat and the luggage compartment and in addition even higher comfort. And there you probably have a lot of the explanation for the large discrepancy in the sales figures.

You should be a little particularly interested in going for the DS 3 Crossback …

But it is at least one of the electric cars that after all sun marks will cost the same after the New Year.
