Tesla wants to impose remote updates on unwilling owners

Tesla’s trademark, the updates over the air(OTA) are common with the manufacturer and are not to the liking of some owners who refuse them. Tesla threatens to remove certain features from them.

Common in the world of high-tech, updates over the air (OTA, or “remotely” in French) improve certain features. It’s one of Tesla’s favorite media that popularized itover the air in the automotive industry, now followed by other manufacturers.

If Tesla updates generally bring improvements (autonomy, Autopilot), new content, a revised and corrected interface, the owners of the brand’s models are not required to accept them. Especially when certain new features are not to the liking of drivers.

Starting with the obligation to leave your hands on the steering wheel when the Autopilot is activated, under penalty of untimely alerts. Let’s also mention the limitation of autonomy on the Model S in order to preserve the batteries, the addition of speed limits or a new interface. As a result, Tesla owners refuse to update their vehicles.

The Californian recently sent a message in the form of an ultimatum asking that the vehicles in question update to version 2019.40.2.3 before May 1, 2020, citing an improvement of the Tesla network for increased security as well as “maintain compatibility and access to the functionality of connected vehicles“.

After this deadline, Tesla that has not complied will no longer be able to receive new software updates, access the mobile application, use voice commands or receive streaming media content.

It remains to be seen whether the Tesla car owners will capitulate or if, if not, Tesla will impose its updates.

According to research firm ABI Research, by 2022, some 203 million vehicles should be affected by remote software updates (SOTA – Software-Over-the-Air) and firmwares (FOTA – Firmware Over-the-Air) (source ZDNet).
