This is especially impressive considering the 2023 Model Y starts at $47,490 in the US, which is significantly higher than the $21,550 for the Corolla and $27,575 for the RAV4.

Model Y sales are up 69% year-over-year.

The Tesla Model Y sold 267,200 units in the first quarter of this year, setting a world record ahead of the Corolla with 256,400 units and the RAV4 with 211,000 sold in the same period.

Elon Musk previously predicted that the Model Y would take the top spot in sales.

“We think the Model Y will be the best-selling car or vehicle of any type in the world. Probably next year,” he told investors in 2021. writes The Verge.

The Model Y fell short of that goal then, but came third in the overall 2022 global rankings, placing sixth on America’s top 10 best-selling car list despite stiff competition from pickups and full-size SUVs.

Last year, the Model Y also became the best-selling car in Europe and California and ranked fourth in sales in China, up 15 spots from the previous year.

It should be noted that while the Tesla Model Y is now the world’s best-selling car, Tesla is certainly not the world’s largest automaker.

Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors and Ford report higher earnings and sales volumes. Tesla isn’t even in the top 10 global automakers, ranking 19th in 2022.
