The mine, which is owned by the Australian company Syrah, produces around 350,000 tonnes of raw graphite a year. Tesla has entered into an agreement to buy 80 percent of this.

In refined form, graphite is one of the main components in batteries. The battery in an electric car, which Tesla produces, can contain around 50 kilos of graphite.

The agreement between Tesla and Syrah is believed to be the first of its kind, and it is seen as a piece in the puzzle where the electric car industry tries to secure minerals without being dependent on China, which dominates the graphite market.

And Tesla needs a lot of graphite – the company produces around one million electric cars a year and will soon open two new large factories.
