Terry Rozier Arrested as Part of Federal Gambling Investigation
MIAMI – Terry Rozier, currently a guard for the Miami Heat, was arrested Thursday as part of a federal investigation into sports betting, according to multiple reports. The arrest stems from unusual betting activity surrounding a Charlotte Hornets-New Orleans Pelicans game on March 23,2023,when Rozier played for the Hornets.
The investigation, which has already led to the NBA ban of former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter for manipulating games for gambling purposes, centers on a surge of bets placed on the under for Rozier’s combined points, rebounds, and assists. Sportsbooks halted betting on the prop bet due to the volume – including 30 wagers totaling $13,759 placed in 46 minutes by a single professional bettor – prompting scrutiny after Rozier left the game after just 10 minutes, citing a foot injury.
Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty, previously stated his client cooperated with both NBA and FBI officials in multiple interviews throughout 2023, and the initial league investigation found no wrongdoing on Rozier’s part. The NBA also confirmed at the time that its review did not reveal any violations of league rules.
the case is connected to the broader scandal involving porter, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges for manipulating his performance in two games during the 2023-24 season and is awaiting sentencing in December. Four individuals have pleaded guilty in the case, with two others identified as conspirators currently in plea negotiations.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently addressed the league’s efforts to combat betting manipulation, stating the NBA is working with sportsbook partners to potentially reduce the availability of certain prop bets, particularly those involving players with less impact on game outcomes. “We’re trying to put in place – learning as we go and working with the betting companies – some additional control to prevent some of that manipulation,” Silver said on “The Pat McAfee show” on Tuesday.
Rozier, 31, is in the final year of a four-year, $96.3 million contract originally signed with the Hornets in August 2021. He was traded to the Heat in January 2024.
