The attacker was shot dead by the police.

Previously, two people were arrested in the city of Sankt Poelten in northeastern Austria. Two residential buildings were searched in the city on Tuesday, according to APA. The “Kurier” newspaper announced on its website that it concerns two contact addresses of the alleged perpetrator.

During a press conference, Nehammer reported that the police carried out 18 raids on the homes of people associated with the perpetrator of the attack in Vienna killed by the police. He added that the perpetrators had managed to “cheat” the Austrian jihadist deradicalisation program. According to the head of the Austrian Interior Ministry, the man only pretended to integrate.

The attacker was an Austrian-born 20-year-old Albanian whose family comes from North Macedonia, who had been punished in the past under the laws on terrorist organizations.

Earlier, Nehammer reported that the perpetrator of the shot had tried in the past to travel to Syria to join the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS), but the Austrian authorities did not allow him to do so. In April last year, he was sentenced to nearly two years in prison for belonging to a terrorist organization, after which he was conditionally released on December 5.
