Antarctica definitely not a friendly continent. The cold is extraordinary and the strong winds are flashing, the ice fields are sometimes unstable. So there are quite a lot of victims whose bodies may never be found.
Yes, scientists and adventurers take a high risk if they want to go to Antarctica. Those who died were lost forever because they were hard to find. It is even estimated that there are hundreds of frozen bodies trapped in the Antarctic ice sheet from various unfortunate missions.
“Some were only discovered decades or even more than a century later,” writes BBC science columnist Marta Henriques. detikINET, Friday (1/7/2022).
“But many that are lost will never be found, buried so deep in the ice or in the abyss Antarctica so they will never show up. Or, the body is moving towards the ocean with glaciers and ice,” he explained.
In the extreme regions of the Earth, this is common. For comparison, it is estimated that there are more than 200 bodies on Mount Everest. They are climbers who are victims.
Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest place on Earth. Even scientists have found hundreds of penguin carcasses that were thought to have died because of being hit by so thick snow.
One of the unfortunate missions in Antarctica was the British Antarctic Expedition between 1910 and 1913. British adventurer Robert Falcon Scott and four of his team hoped to be the first to reach the South Pole in 1912.
