Tensions between Xi Jinping and Biden, the world trembles

Chinese President Xi Jinping told his US counterpart Joe Biden on the situation with Taiwan during their phone call last month that now was not the time for a full-scale crisis, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing a source close to the Chinese leader, BNR reported.

The call, which took place on July 28, came amid renewed tensions over the stance of both Beijing and Washington on Taiwan and days before US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was due to visit the island.

During the conversation, Xi Jinping warned Joe Biden not to “play with fire” on the issue of Taiwan. The US president told his Chinese counterpart to “avoid taking steps that could threaten regional stability”.

Meanwhile, US House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory Meeks said yesterday that Washington is seeking to avoid a conflict over Taiwan similar to the one in Ukraine.

Unlike China, the United States does not want to change the status quo on Taiwan, New York Congressman Gregory Meeks said on Wednesday.

Meeks, who took part in US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island last week, added at a press conference that all the Asian “friends and allies” who hosted them during the Asian visit “wanted to see” the delegation of Washington and its “soft power”.

The representative in the House of Representatives from Illinois – Raja Krishnamurthy emphasized that the trip to Taiwan was important because Washington “wanted to make sure that what happened in Ukraine does not happen in relation to the Southeast Asian region and particularly in Taiwan”.
