Ten politicians on the chair of the mayor of Riga

At the end of August, Rigans will go to the polls to select politicians who will represent their interests in the Riga City Council for the next five years. To do this, the elected parties will have to agree on the formation of a coalition and elect a new mayor of Riga. The portal “Delfi” briefly introduces each of the ten currently officially nominated candidates for the mayor’s chair.

During the term of the Riga City Council, which was dismissed in February, 60 deputies from six political forces worked – the party “Unity”, “Latvia’s Development”, “Harmony”, “Honor to Serve Riga”, the New Conservative Party and the National Union. Since the election in 2017, a total of eight councilors have “separated” from the parties, forming two blocs of deputies.

With the dismissal of the city council, the reins of the city administration have been taken over by the interim administration consisting of officials of three ministries, who will perform the functions of the city council provided by law and will function until the day when the newly elected council meets.

Parties have the right to submit lists of candidates to the Central Election Commission from July 14 to 20, therefore the line of politicians who want to get into the chair of the mayor of Riga may both expand and shrink.

Riga City Council extraordinary elections, the date of which had to be postponed twice due to the proliferation of Covid-19, will take place on 29 August, but the official pre-election campaign period began on July 7.
