The temporary night shelter for asylum seekers will move from 2nd Exloërmond to Zuidwolde from April 9. The municipality of De Wolden will then make a plot available on the Leeuwenveenseweg to set up three large tents.
A maximum of two hundred asylum seekers can go there. De Wolden is thus responding to a request from the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA), which wants to prevent people from having to sleep outside on the lawn in front of the registration center in Ter Apel.
The crisis shelter has been in 2e Exloërmond since February and before that in Stadskanaal. The doors in 2e Exloërmond were actually supposed to close last weekend, but the shelter will remain open until April 10 at the request of the COA.
“It is sad that it is necessary,” says mayor Inge Nieuwenhuizen of De Wolden. “Sometimes you just have to help. We offer a warm tent, with hot food, a hot shower and a warm bed. I went to look at 2e Exloërmond with councilor Rudi Hooch Antink. It is a temporary night shelter. The people will come in the evening arriving by bus and leaving again in the morning by bus.”
The layout of the site, which is fenced and monitored, will be the same in Zuidwolde as in Stadskanaal and 2e Exloërmond. The temporary night shelter is provided by COA and will remain in De Wolden until June 9, after which another municipality will take over.
