Television version of Flashdance in the works

Studio Paramount is working on a television series around Flashdance, the big movie hit from 1983. It is not yet known whether cast members from the original film will work on the series.

Flashdance was the big breakthrough of Jennifer Beals, who played a welder in the film who dreamed of a dance career. The movie was a big hit: Flashdance brought in over $ 200 million worldwide, making the movie the third highest earning of 1983. The song What A Feeling from the film, sung by Irene Cara, won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best original film song and the soundtrack of the film won awards at the Grammys.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plot for the series is intended to be fairly close to that of the film. The television version is about a young black woman who dreams of a ballet career but who actually works in a strip club.

The series is produced for streaming service CBS All Access, which now shows series such as Star Trek: Discovery, The Good Fight and Picard in the US. The platform will be rebranded as Paramount + early next year.
