The facts happened on Wednesday on the Grote Markt in Aalst. A 16-year-old boy was approached by bystanders for not wearing a mouth mask. The teenager continued to refuse and when the police arrived on the scene, a skirmish ensued. One of the officers was headbutted, making him incapacitated for work. The young man was arrested, after which his family is said to have turned against the police and tried to free him from the police car.
The teen will appear before the juvenile judge, who can impose appropriate measures. Mayor Christoph D’Haese hopes that the suspect will be placed in a closed institution.
