Team of British Doctors Call Corona Can Brain Damage

The team found the virus did not directly attack the corona patient’s brain.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON – Team of doctors in the UK warns corona virus can trigger brain damage. According to a recent study by University College London (UCL), Covid-19 can cause fatal neurological complications in the brain including delirium, nerve damage, and stroke than previously thought.

Research by UCL shows that serious problems in a patient’s body can occur even in individuals with mild cases of corona virus. In the latest test, the team of doctors looked at the neurological symptoms of 43 patients who were hospitalized with positive diagnoses of Covid-19 as well as those newly suspected of having Covid-19.

They found 10 cases of temporary brain dysfunction, 12 cases of brain inflammation, eight strokes, and eight cases of nerve damage. Most patients with inflammation are diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) or a rare condition that is usually seen in children after a viral infection.

“We identified a higher than expected number of people with neurological conditions such as brain inflammation, which did not always correlate with the severity of respiratory symptoms,” Michael Zandi of the Queen Square Institute of Neurology and UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was quoted as saying. Al Arabiya, Wednesday (8/7).

Research published in the journal Brain shows that no patient was diagnosed with neurological problems have Covid-19 in their cerebrospinal fluid. So that shows that the virus does not directly attack their brains.

Most importantly, the team found that ADEM diagnoses were not related to the severity of Covid-19 respiratory disease.

“Given that the disease has only been around for a few months, we may not know what can cause long-term damage to Covid-19,” said Ross Paterson of the Queen Square Institute of Neurology at UCL.

“Doctors need to be aware of possible neurological effects, because early diagnosis can improve patient outcomes,” he added.

With more than 11 million confirmed infections worldwide, Covid-19 is known to cause various health complications besides lung infections. While the results of the study show that brain complications can be more common among virus patients than predicted.

Experts say that does not mean the case brain damage spread out. “An interesting observation of a pandemic means that it is very unlikely that there is a large parallel pandemic of unusual brain damage associated with Covid-19,” said Anthony David, director of the UCL Mental Health Institute.
