Team Nigeria Dominates All African Para Badminton Championships wiht 36 Medals
Umuahia, Abia State – The All African Para Badminton Championships concluded in Umuahia, Nigeria, on Sunday, with Team Nigeria achieving a resounding victory, securing a total of 36 medals. The Nigerian team led the medal count with 10 gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze medals.
This accomplished hosting and performance underscores Nigeria’s growing prominence in para-sports and its commitment too inclusivity in athletics. The championships, wich drew athletes from across the continent, serve as a crucial qualifying event for future international competitions, including the Paralympic Games. The event’s success also highlights the increasing visibility and support for para-badminton within Africa.
Kenya finished second overall with 11 medals (4 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze), while Egypt secured third place with 3 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze. Participating nations also included Benin Republic, Cameroon, Mauritius, Mozambique, Tanzania, Rwanda, DR Congo, and Burkina Faso.
Abia State Governor Alex otti, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, lauded the event as a “festivity of resilience and unity.” He expressed gratitude to the participating countries and the Badminton World Federation and Badminton Confederation of Africa for their support, adding that his administration is open to hosting the championships again next year.
Obioma George,Director of Sports in Abia,highlighted the significant contribution of Abia State athletes to Nigeria’s overall success and thanked Governor Otti for his sponsorship of the championship.
