Taylor Swift on eating disorder: ‘Head of gossip magazine felt like punishment’ | NOW

In the documentary Miss Americana, which premiered Thursday at the Sundance Film Festival, Taylor Swift talks about the eating disorder she developed as a young artist. On Variety the singer explains that at the age of eighteen she was influenced by the head of a gossip magazine.

“I approached food the same as everything else in my life,” says the now thirty-year-old singer. “If I got a pat on the back, I registered that as something positive. If I was punished, I registered that as a negative.”

Swift gives an example. “I remember when I was 18 when I was on the cover of a magazine for the first time. In the headline was something like” eighteen and pregnant? ” registered it as a punishment. “

“At another time I walked into a photo shoot and someone in the dressing room said it was so special that I matched the size of clothing samples,” Swift continues. “I was told that they would normally have to change dresses, but now they could go to me directly from the catwalk. I saw that as a pat on the back.”

“I’ve never wanted to talk about this before”

The singer explains what the consequences have been. “If you register such events often enough, you will see everything as praise and punishment, including your own body.”

“I never really wanted to talk about this before,” says the singer. “And it still feels uncomfortable now. But in the context of everything I did and did not do in my life, I now understand that it ended up in the film.”

The documentary Taylor Swift: Miss Americana can be seen on Netflix from January 31.
