‘Tax authorities demand part of compensation for victims of benefits affair’ | NOW

Victims of the childcare allowance affair must return part of the compensation they receive to the tax authorities. The interest group for administrators in debt restructuring (BBW) reports this to the daily newspaper Faithful. The association has withdrawn from the consultation with the tax authorities out of irritation about this.

For years, the Tax and Customs Administration has mistakenly viewed several tens of thousands of parents as people who have committed fraud with benefits. This led to great personal and financial problems for them. Many are still struggling with debts, including to the tax authorities.

The cabinet has now promised that the victims will receive compensation of at least 30,000 euros. However, the Tax and Customs Administration now requires the victims to use part of this compensation to pay off their debt to the service.

Until recently, the BBW was in talks with the tax authorities about a compensation scheme, but has now withdrawn from this consultation. The association does not agree with the tax authorities’ choice to claim the compensation.

The association has written a letter to the service, in which it has expressed its objections. “BBW has expressed its objections several times and has wanted to protect the tax authorities, the government and other committee members from the current disastrous plans, but has not received any response. BBW does not support the proposed regulation.”

The Tax and Customs Administration has priority when paying off debts

It is true that the service has proposed not to claim the first 10,000 euros in compensation, but the remainder must be used by the parents to pay off their debt to the tax authorities. The service can demand that because it takes precedence when people start paying off their debts.

According to the BBW, it makes little difference that the service does not claim the first 10,000 euros. This is because that money will probably go to other creditors.

The news comes out on the same day that the cabinet decided to step down due to the affair. The day before, PvdA party leader Lodewijk Asscher decided to no longer stand for election because of his role in the affair.
