Tallink will suspend the Riga-Helsinki route until spring / Article / LSM.lv

Tallink Grupp suspends the ferry route Riga – Helsinki and cancels all flights until spring 2021, the company informed the media.

Last Friday, September 25, the company announced that it would stop traffic on the route by the end of October this year and will decide on the future operation of the route in the coming weeks.

Evaluating the number of reservations for the next months on the route, the company already this week decided to cancel the route until the spring of 2021.

The reopening of the route depends to a large extent on the further development of the Covid-19 pandemic, possible travel restrictions in the region and demand, as well as negotiations with governments in the company’s operating markets. The company currently plans to resume operations on the route in May 2021.

When the Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control Finland was added to the list of countries, in which the 14-day cumulative Covid-19 morbidity rate per 100,000 inhabitants exceeds 16, thus requiring all travelers arriving from Finland to Latvia to observe 10 days of self-isolation, the number of passenger reservations has rapidly decreased.

Commenting on the decision to suspend the route until next spring, Pavoo Negene, Chairman of the Board of Tallink Grupp, said that “the decision to suspend the route is never easy. Even now, the situation has not become simpler, because this challenging year is constantly bringing both ups and downs to us ”.

However, with the inclusion of Finland in the ‘yellow list’, the number of reservations for the following period decreased significantly. The result is a situation where we have no choice but to stop the ship on the route in order to avoid losses.

We hope to renew the route Riga – Helsinki from May 2021, and negotiations are already underway with the Latvian authorities, ”Negene pointed out.

Tallink customer service specialists will contact all passengers who have booked trips on the route Riga – Helsinki in the near future.

Currently, traffic from the ship “Victoria I” is provided from Riga on the route Riga – Stockholm, performing special voyages once a week.
