Afghan farmers can stop growing poppy, Taliban pledges

A militant spokesman announced the new authorities’ strong intentions, but the Taliban need international assistance to do this.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the new authorities will do everything to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a center for the production of drugs. Mujahid said this on Tuesday, August 17, at his first press conference after the seizure of Kabul, which was broadcast by the TV channel Al Jazeera.

“I want to assure the whole world that Afghanistan will not become a center for the production of any kind of drugs. We will try to eradicate this evil,” Mujahid said.

According to him, Afghan farmers will be able to stop growing poppy if the international community helps them to develop other crops.

“In 2001, if you remember, the volume of drug production dropped to zero, but then the Afghan territory was occupied, and drug cultivation resumed, including at the government level. But now we do not intend to be involved in drug trafficking and drug trafficking anymore,” he said. he.

The Mujahid promised that Afghanistan would henceforth become a drug-free country, but for this the Taliban need international support.

“The international community must help us find an alternative – provide us with alternative cultures,” the Taliban spokesman said, promising that this would end drugs.

Mujahid also promised at a press conference that Taliban will not take revenge on anyone.
