Taliban Foreign Minister to Iran, Tehran Confirms Not Recognizing Government

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Regime Foreign Minister Taliban, Amir Khan Muttaqi, visited Iran for the first time since his group took power Afghanistan. However, Iran insists that this trip does not mean they recognize the Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

“Today is basically not the point we admit [pemerintahan Taliban],” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh, as quoted by Antara AFP, Saturday (8/1).

The Afghan Foreign Ministry under the Taliban said the visit was a follow -up to a meeting between Muttaqi and a number of previous Iranian officials.

“This visit aims to discuss political, economic and refugee issues between Afghanistan and Iran,” said Taliban Foreign Ministry spokesman Badul Qahar Balkhi.

So far, Iran has hosted millions of Afghan refugees. Now, they are worried about a further influx of refugees due to the crisis in Afghanistan after the Taliban came to power.

The economic crisis in Afghanistan has worsened after a number of foreign parties withdrew aid and froze assets after the Taliban took power in August.

World powers, including Iran, are urging the Taliban to form inclusive governments, according to their promises after seizing power.

But so far, there has been no sign of the Taliban fulfilling that promise. The ranks of the interim government they announced consisted of only men, and the majority were Pashtun.

In addition, the Taliban continues to impose rules restricting women in employment and education.
