“Taliban Bans Women from Eid al-Fitr Celebrations in Two Afghan Districts”

TEMPO.CO, JakartaTaliban has banned women from participating in Hari Raya celebrations Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijriyah which falls today Friday 21 April 2023, in two districts of Afghanistan, ahead of widespread celebrations in the country to mark the end of Ramadan.

Two similar notices show local Taliban leaders in northern Baghlan district and northeastern Takhar district saying “women are prohibited from going out in groups during Eid days” on Friday.

The order does not apply throughout Afghanistan, but only in two districts.

This comes just weeks after the Taliban’s latest series of restrictions have banned families and women from visiting restaurants with gardens or green spaces in Afghanistan’s northwestern Herat province.

An official said the order barred women from visiting restaurants with gardens after complaints from clerics and members of the public against mixing genders in the spaces.

Earlier this week, Afghanistan’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, released an Eid message to the country in five languages – Arabic, Dari, English, Pashto and Urdu.

At the end of his Ramadan message, Akhundzada praised the Taliban for making “progress” in Afghanistan after taking control of the government in August 2021.

“The bad intellectual and moral effects of 20 years of occupation will soon be over,” he said, praising “living in the light” of Sharia, or Islamic law.

The leader is believed to have played a powerful role in dictating laws and domestic policies in Afghanistan, particularly those that prohibit girls’ education after sixth grade.

He also barred Afghan women from public life and work for non-governmental organizations and the United Nations.

Women in Afghanistan have been banned by the Taliban from public spaces such as parks and gyms. The moves have sparked a fierce international uproar, increased the country’s isolation at a time when its economy is collapsing — and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis.
