Taliban and Afghan army ceasefire due to end of Ramadan

The Taliban have declared a three-day ceasefire due to the end of Ramadan. In a response, Afghan President Ghani promised that the Afghan army would also lay down its weapons for three days.

The promises follow a visit by the US envoy Khalizad to the Afghan capital of Kabul and Doha, the capital of Qatar where the Taliban have offices. Khalizad urged both sides to reduce violence and continue peace negotiations.

The Taliban leadership orders combatants not to attack themselves for the next three days. If an enemy opens fire, they may “respond appropriately”.

No ice creams

Despite the armistice, the fighters are emphatically instructed not to behave in a friendly manner with the government army. During the previous ceasefire in 2018, photos showed Taliban fighters and government army soldiers eating ice cream together.

The Taliban and the United States closed on February 29 a peace agreement. In it, the US military promises complete withdrawal by the end of 2021. In return, the Taliban must prevent violence against the US and its allies, including by terrorist group al-Qaida.

The Taliban has not attacked any NATO military since. There were, however, several attacks on the Afghan government army.
