Taiwanese gets prison sentence and 90,000 euros fine because his parrot injures doctor | Animals

A Taiwanese man has been held responsible by a court for the injuries of a doctor who was frightened by his parrot. The man was given a prison sentence of two months and a fine of 90,000 euros, the report reports BBC and Taiwanese Central News Tuesday.

The man had taken his pet outside at the end of 2020. While flying around, the animal landed on the back of the doctor, who was jogging nearby.

The doctor was so frightened by the large bird, which is 40 centimeters long and has a wingspan of 60 centimeters, that it fell to the ground. He broke his pelvis and dislocated his hip.

The doctor sued the parrot’s owner because he was unable to work for months after the incident. According to his lawyer, as a plastic surgeon he often has to stand for a long time during operations, which was no longer possible due to his injuries.

The Taiwanese court ruled that the owner had been negligent. His parrot is considered a ‘large animal’ due to its size. Therefore, the man should have taken more precautions.

The owner of the parrot is appealing. He especially thinks the prison sentence is disproportionate and argues that his animals are not aggressive. Nothing is known about the fate of the parrot itself.
