Taiwan promises millions to Taiwan – Jauns.lv

The fund is founded by the Taiwan National Development Fund and private sector companies. “The foundation has extensive experience and expertise in the development of advanced industries,” said Eric Juan, head of Taiwan’s representative office in Vilnius.

A helping hand

The investment package is part of Taiwan’s action plan to develop economic ties with Lithuania in response to Chinese pressure, which Taipei has described as unprecedented and a violation of international law.

The plan also calls for the establishment of a special working group to promote cooperation between Lithuanian and Taiwanese companies and the takeover of Lithuanian goods blocked by China, including in urgent cases. Juan says results can be expected in the next few months.

Pressure on Lithuania

Beijing has been putting recent economic and diplomatic pressure on Lithuania in response to Vilnius’ decision to allow the rebel island to open a mission using the Taiwanese name in its name.

Beijing is trying to prevent any attempt by Taiwan to act as an independent state. Elsewhere in the world, such representations use the name of Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, to undermine Beijing’s “one China” policy, which prevents Taiwan from being seen as a separate country.

To the delight of Beijing, Lithuanian President Gitan Nauseda acknowledged that it was a mistake to use the Taiwanese name to represent the island in Vilnius, and the issue was not agreed with him. However, the President also points out that Lithuania is a sovereign country with the right to maintain economic and cultural ties with other countries or territories. “The Taipei mission is not a diplomatic mission and does not violate the” one China “principle,” the president said.

At a loss of 300 million

In the autumn, China suspended freight trains to Lithuania, stopped issuing food export permits, reduced its credit limit, increased prices for Lithuanian companies, and removed Lithuania from its customs system.

About 60 Lithuanian companies have caused problems due to these unofficial sanctions, and the losses could reach 300 million euros this year, said Vidmants Janulevičs, President of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists. The confederation has called on senior Lithuanian officials to respond immediately to China’s actions, including by involving the European Union institutions.

At the end of December, the Lithuanian government decided to allocate six million euros to companies affected by Chinese pressure. The funds are intended to improve competitiveness and diversify markets.

Beijing is also trying to influence Germany

Lithuania has received Washington’s support in this fight between David and Goliath in a conversation between US Trade Representative Catherine Tai and Foreign Minister Gabriel Landsberg.

There is no clear common position in the European Union (EU). For example, official German support in the dispute with China may not be expected, said Arūnas Laurinaitis, vice-president of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists, after a meeting with representatives of the German company and the ministries responsible for import and export.

Germany has made it clear that it has many factories and companies in China, so it does not want to anger China. We understand that we will not receive official or declared support from Germany or other member states, ”Laurinaitis told Lithuanian Public Radio.

In December, China put pressure on German auto parts manufacturer Continental to stop using parts made in Lithuania. Significantly, China’s business tentacles have stretched into European automotive, with companies owning nearly a fifth of the shares in the German company Daimler, and the Chinese carmaker Geely in Sweden’s Volvo Cars.

Other countries are also suffering

At the end of December, Lithuanian Minister of Economy and Innovation Aušrine Armonaite revealed that she and Foreign Minister Gabriel Landsberg had received a letter from German business associations informing them of the pressure from Beijing. However, she doubted that there was a real risk of international companies leaving Lithuania.

EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis warned German newspaper Die Welt that China’s actions are increasingly affecting companies in other member states: “Obviously, Chinese customs do not process goods from other EU countries if they contain components from Lithuania.” There are many cases of goods imported from Lithuania and the EU being stopped in Chinese ports, and the number is growing every day.

China threatens war

In 1949, when the government of the Republic of China lost to the Communists in the Civil War and fled to the island of Taiwan, “de facto” two Chinese nations emerged. Communist China called itself the People’s Republic of China, and the Chinese nationalist government in Taiwan continued to call itself the Republic of China. Beijing still sees Taiwan as part of its territory and has declared the goal of recovering the lost island without ruling out war.

Several military exercises have simulated an invasion of Taiwan. In December, hundreds of Chinese soldiers and tanks played a street battle to capture Taiwan, Chinese CCTV reported. Taiwanese soldiers were also training for warfare in the city this month, as in the event of an attack, fighting is likely to take place in such an environment. Taiwanese militias predict that the Chinese army would launch an attack on coastal towns, then move to denser residential and commercial areas, and eventually move to mountain villages.
