The incident was at a time when Taiwan was experiencing increased pressure from China. Taiwan deployed fighter jets almost every day to intercept Chinese planes.
Although the Taiwan Air Force is well trained and equipped, it is mostly with US-made equipment.
Beijing views the island of Taiwan as its own territory and has never abandoned the use of force to bring it under Chinese control.
“Two F-5E fighter jets, each with one pilot aboard, crashed into the sea off the southeast coast of the island after colliding in the air during a training mission,” said a Taiwan Air Force statement.
