Condition China and Taiwan getting hotter. China has repeatedly sent military planes towards Taiwan, while its leaders have exchanged tongues and even declared they are ready for war. However, the Taiwanese said they were not worried.
Two grandmothers in their 80s, Huang and Chang, for example. They started the morning by talking about snacks, tea, and whether they should exercise. War is not something to worry about, they say.
“We are not worried about it (war) at all. The threat is always there and there is nothing to worry about. If it was going to happen, it should have happened a long time ago,” Huang said. CNN.
Even so, both said that they did not want war. They also judged that if an invasion occurred in Taiwan, it would be beyond the control of the country’s people.
“If war is going to happen, whether we worry about it or not, it makes no difference,” they said.
Some fear Taiwan will reunite with China as a result of Beijing’s coercion. However, many people also believe that the Chinese government will not resort to coercion.
“I think China and Taiwan have always coexisted peacefully. There are Taiwanese people in mainland China, and there are Chinese people in mainland Taiwan. We are all Chinese,” said Taipei market trader Vicky Tsai.
Tsai also said that the rising tensions between the Chinese and Taiwanese militaries had little impact on people’s lives. Many Taiwanese regard this tension as a game of the upper class.
“I think it’s more important to earn money,” he said.
Reporter on military issues in TVBS News Taiwan, Liu Ting-ting, also argues that although tensions in the two countries are rising, this issue does not affect people’s daily lives.
“People are more worried about whether they can put food on the table,” Liu said.
According to Liu, Taiwanese people don’t care about the mutual territorial claims between Beijing and Taipei. So far, China has claimed Taiwan as part of the country’s territory.
However, Taiwan has always denied that claim. China is known for its authoritarian leadership, while Taiwan adheres to democratic values.
Liu said that if China finally decided to take Taiwan by force, the public could say nothing.
“There’s nothing they can do about it,” Liu said.
