Title: Australia Shark Attack: Tourist Dies, Man Seriously Injured

Shark Attack in Australia Leaves One Dead, Another Critically Injured

Sydney, Australia – A shark attack on a beach in New South Wales, Australia, has resulted in one fatality and left another person with serious leg injuries, authorities confirmed today. The incident occurred Thursday, prompting a search and the planned deployment of drumlines to attempt to catch the shark.

The victims, identified by media reports as European tourists, were attacked while in the water. A bystander on the beach applied a makeshift tourniquet to the injured man’s leg, a measure authorities beleive potentially saved his life and aided paramedics in providing immediate care. “I just really need to have a shoutout to the bystander on the beach who put a makeshift tourniquet on the male’s leg which obviously potentially saved his life and allowed New South Wales Ambulance paramedics to get to him and render frist aid,” said a spokesperson for the responding authorities.

Police are working with experts to determine the species of shark involved. Gavin Naylor, director of the University of florida’s shark research program and manager of the International Shark attack File database, noted that a single shark attacking multiple people is “very unusual,” though not unheard of. He added that such incidents are typically linked to tiger sharks, stating, “The few bites that we do have where a single shark has bitten multiple people, it’s usually tiger sharks. We’ve never seen white sharks do that unless somebody’s heroically jumping in the way.”

The attack comes after a separate incident in September where a 57-year-old surfer was fatally mauled by a shark off a Sydney beach. Sections of the surfer’s board were recovered from the scene at Long Reef beach. In 2019, two british tourists were also attacked by a single shark while snorkeling on the Grate Barrier Reef, resulting in serious injuries to both.

Shark attacks remain rare, but authorities urge caution when entering the water and advise adherence to beach safety guidelines.

Mexico to Build ‌latin America‘s Most ⁣Powerful ‍Supercomputer

MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexico announced‌ Wednesday plans to construct a supercomputer projected to be the most powerful ⁤in Latin America,a move officials say will position the country⁤ at the forefront of artificial intelligence development and considerably expand its data processing capabilities.

The‌ project, named “Coatlicue” after the Aztec goddess ⁣of earth, is anticipated to be ⁣seven times more powerful than the current regional ⁤leader located in Brazil, according to José merino, head of the Telecommunications ⁤and‌ Digital Change Agency. President Claudia Sheinbaum ‍revealed the initiative‌ during her‌ daily press⁢ conference, stating construction is slated to⁤ begin next year,‍ though a specific location remains undecided.

This investment reflects a growing global race to⁢ harness the potential‌ of AI, with nations increasingly ⁣recognizing supercomputing power as critical infrastructure. Currently, Mexico’s most powerful supercomputer operates‌ at ⁤2.3 petaflops – one quadrillion operations⁤ per second. Coatlicue is projected to achieve a‍ capacity of ⁢314 petaflops, enabling ‌advancements in fields like climate modeling,‍ scientific research, and data⁤ analysis.

“It is going‌ to allow Mexico to⁤ fully get⁤ in on the use of artificial intelligence⁢ and⁣ the processing of data⁤ that today we don’t have⁣ the capacity to do,” Sheinbaum, an ‍academic and climate scientist, said.‌

The⁢ development comes as Latin American countries seek ‍to reduce their reliance on foreign technology⁢ and foster domestic innovation in⁣ the ‍rapidly evolving tech landscape. The Coatlicue project signals Mexico’s ambition to become⁣ a regional hub for AI ⁤research and development.

Guinea-Bissau President Detained as Soldiers Announce Coup

BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau – Soldiers in Guinea-Bissau appeared ‍on state television Wednesday, declaring they have seized power, hours ‌after gunfire erupted near the presidential palace. President Umaro⁣ Sissoco embaló confirmed to French‍ media he had been detained by the military in what he described as a coup led by ‌the army chief of staff. He stated⁤ he was not subjected‍ to violence.

The unfolding events follow Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections, where both Embaló and ‌opposition candidate ‍Fernando Dias da Costa‍ claimed victory, despite official provisional results not expected until Thursday.

According ‍to a staff ⁤member from ⁣an international election observer group, the president⁣ of the National‌ Electoral Commission was arrested and the commission office sealed off by the‍ military.

Embaló’s presidency has been marked by political instability. The opposition argued his term expired on February 27, 2024, despite a Supreme Court ruling extending ⁤it to September 4, 2024. The presidential election ‍was subsequently delayed until this month.

Guinea-Bissau has a history of political turmoil, having experienced four coups and numerous attempted coups since gaining independence. The country has also become a transit point for drug trafficking between Latin America and Europe. This latest progress adds to a pattern of instability that has plagued the West African nation.

Israel Returns 15 Palestinian Bodies to Gaza

GAZA STRIP – Israeli authorities ⁤handed over the bodies of 15 Palestinians to Gaza officials on Tuesday, according to hospital authorities in the territory.⁢ The transfer brings the total⁣ number of Palestinian bodies⁣ returned by Israel since⁢ the ⁢start of its offensive to 69,775, with an additional 170,863 reported injured as of the same date.

Gaza’s Health Ministry, staffed by medical professionals ‍who maintain detailed records considered generally reliable by independent‌ experts, states that the majority of those killed are women and children, though it does not differentiate between civilians‌ and combatants in its overall figures.

the return of bodies comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to solidify the⁣ current ceasefire ⁣and plan for future stabilization. ‍Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin ‍met in Cairo Tuesday with Qatar’s Prime⁣ Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh⁢ Mohammed bin Abdulrahman ⁤al Thani ‍and Egypt’s intelligence chief‍ Hasan Reshat‌ to discuss advancing‌ to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. Title: Witkoff Advised Putin on Pitching Peace Plan to Trump

Trump Ally Advised Putin Aide⁢ on Framing ‍Peace Plan to Former President, Recording Reveals

WASHINGTON – ⁤A recording of a conversation between a close‌ advisor to Vladimir Putin and a Trump-appointed envoy reveals efforts ⁣to shape a prospective Ukraine peace proposal in a⁢ manner more palatable to Donald Trump, according to a Bloomberg report published Tuesday. The exchange ⁣details how the Trump ally coached the Putin aide on presenting the plan, ⁣which reportedly ⁢leaned heavily ⁢toward Russian ⁤demands, to the former president.

The recording features Tom Witkoff,‍ a special envoy for‌ Ukraine⁢ peace ‌talks appointed by trump, ‍speaking with Kirill Dmitriev, a ⁣close advisor to Putin on‍ Ukraine. The conversation occurred on October ⁢29, shortly after Dmitriev met ‌in Florida with Witkoff ⁤and‌ Jared Kushner,⁢ Trump’s ‌son-in-law and informal advisor, to discuss a 28-point peace plan.

During the call, Dmitriev discussed debating with Ushakov how strongly Moscow should push for its demands in the prospective peace proposal.”I’ll informally pass it along, making it clear that it’s all informal.⁢ And let them do like⁢ their own,” Dmitriev told Ushakov, adding, ”But, ⁢I don’t⁤ think they’ll ‍take exactly our version, but at least it’ll ‌be as close to it as possible.”

The original peace plan, which became public last week, included‌ calls for ‍Ukraine to cede ⁣the entire Donbas region to Russia and significantly reduce its military size. It also proposed a guarantee from Europe that ⁣Ukraine would never join NATO.

Trump had⁣ previously stated,on December 17,that Ukraine and Russia should “stop where they are” on the ⁤battlefield,a position interpreted ‌as advocating for Ukraine to concede territory to Russia.

The White House defended Witkoff’s actions, with communications director Steven Cheung stating, “This story proves one thing: Special Envoy Witkoff ⁢talks⁤ to officials in both Russia and Ukraine nearly every⁣ day to ⁢achieve peace, which is exactly what President Trump appointed him to do.”

Dmitriev dismissed⁣ the transcript as “Fake” in a social media post, adding,”The closer⁣ we get to peace, the more⁤ desperate warmongers become.”⁤ The Russian⁣ Embassy ⁣in Washington did ⁣not respond to a‍ request ⁣for comment.

Secretary of ‍State Marco Rubio has asserted ⁤the proposal originated in the United States, with input from both ⁤Russia and Ukraine, amid criticism that the‍ leaked plan ⁤favored Russian objectives. The State Department declined to‍ comment on ‌the ⁣Bloomberg ⁣report.

Trump has indicated⁢ he is sending⁤ Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to meet with Ukrainian officials while Witkoff ‌meets with Putin, and suggested he ‍could eventually meet ⁣with both Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, pending further negotiation ⁢progress.
