Local Residents Can Learn Garlic Growing Techniques in Upcoming Extension Classes
area gardeners will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of growing garlic this fall, with classes scheduled in Will, Grundy, and Kankakee counties. The University of Illinois Extension is offering the workshops, led by horticulture educator Nancy Kuhajda, to equip residents with the knowlege to successfully cultivate their own garlic crop.
These classes are part of Kuhajda’s “Horticulture Power Hours” series and precede a set of holiday “Give the Gift of Gardening” kits. Learning to grow garlic provides a sustainable source of a popular culinary ingredient and offers a rewarding gardening experience for both beginners and experienced growers.
Kuhajda will cover growing, harvesting, and storing techniques, as well as provide recipes utilizing the homegrown garlic.Garlic kits are available for $15 and include five cloves of various garlic varieties,along with informational materials.
Classes will run from 6 to 7 p.m. on the following dates and locations:
* October 9: Will County Extension office, 100 Manhattan Road, Joliet
* October 15: Kankakee County Extension office, 1650 Commerce Drive, Bourbonnais
* October 16: Grundy County Extension office, 4004 N. division st., Morris
