Trump Deploys National Guard to Memphis Amid Crime Crackdown

Trump Orders National Guard Deployment to Memphis Amid High Crime Rates

MEMPHIS, TN – Former President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of National Guard troops to Memphis, Tennessee, in an effort to combat violent crime, the White House announced September 16, 2025. The move follows a similar deployment to Washington, DC, which officials claim has “restored law & order.”

Trump announced the initiative alongside Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, who expressed his frustration with crime impacting the city. “I have been in office for seven years. I’m tired of crime holding the great city of Memphis back,” lee stated during a signing ceremony.

According to 2024 FBI crime data, Memphis reported the highest rate of violent crime per capita among US cities with populations of 100,000 or more – 2,501 incidents per 100,000 people. This rate is nearly seven times the national average. The cities of Oakland, California (1,925 per 100,000) and Detroit, Michigan (1,781 per 100,000) followed Memphis in violent crime rates.

However, Memphis police report meaningful crime reductions in the first eight months of 2025. “Overall crime is at a 25-year low, with robbery, burglary, and larceny also reaching 25-year lows. Murder is at a six-year low, aggravated assault at a five-year low, and sexual assault at a twenty-year low,” the department stated last week. Despite these declines, the city has recorded 146 homicides and 4,308 aggravated assault cases in 2025.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young, a Democrat, stated he did not request the National Guard deployment and believes it is indeed not the most effective approach to reducing crime. “Yesterday morning, we learned that the Governor & President have decided to place the National Guard & othre resources in Memphis, which they have the authority to do. I want to be clear: I did not ask for the National Guard and I don’t think it is the way to drive down crime,” Young said on X (formerly Twitter) on September 13, 2025.

Memphis is a city renowned for its contributions to music, notably rock and roll, soul, and the blues.

Trump to Deploy National Guard ‍to Memphis, ‌Signaling Expansion of federal Crime Intervention ‍Strategy

Washington D.C. – September 12, 2025 ‌ – President Donald ⁣Trump announced plans Friday to deploy National Guard troops to Memphis, Tennessee, in‍ a move mirroring⁤ his administration’s recent, adn controversial, assumption of⁣ direct control ⁣over law enforcement in Washington, D.C. The decision underscores Trump’s ‍commitment to making crime a ‌central tenet of his political agenda, even as national violent crime statistics demonstrate a downward trend.

“We’re going to Memphis.

charlie ⁢Kirk and the MAGA Movement: A Significant Influence

  • The Key to Kirk’s Success

The extent of Charlie Kirk‘s impact is arduous to quantify precisely, but both the MAGA movement, donald Trump himself, and independent analysts agree he⁢ played a vital role in bolstering support ‍for the former president and his campaign.

Ico Maly, an associate ⁢professor at⁣ Tilburg University specializing⁤ in digital media and far-right activism, asserts that Kirk wielded “significant political and mobilizing ‌influence among⁣ the Trumpist youth.” ‍Maly highlights Kirk’s adeptness at leveraging digital culture as key to his‍ success. ⁤”It⁣ was ⁤his embrace of‌ digital culture that laid the foundation for his mobilization⁣ power in support of the Trump agenda. His campus rallies were not merely offline performances. They reproduced a familiar digital format: ‘Ask me anything,'” Maly explained.

Turning Point USA, the organization founded by Kirk, invested heavily in a “chase the vote” initiative. This involved building relationships with Republican voters in crucial battleground states, registering new voters, and providing assistance with the voting process.

Examining the Data

Leading up to the 2024 presidential election, Kirk embarked on a 25-campus tour titled “you’re Being Brainwashed,” aimed at ⁢mobilizing young voters. Daryl McCann,a writer covering ‌conservative US politics for publications like Quadrant and Spectator Australia, described the tour as “hailed by⁣ some as the single most crucial reason for a surge in Trump’s support among the youngest voters.”

While isolating ⁢Kirk’s specific contribution remains challenging, Trump demonstrably saw‌ an increase in support from younger demographics in 2024.

according to Pew Research Center data, ⁤Trump secured 49 percent of ⁣the vote from men aged 18 to 49 ‌nationally, a rise from 43 percent in 2020 and 46 percent ⁣in 2016. Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, received 48⁣ percent of this demographic in 2024, compared to 53 percent for joe Biden in 2020‍ and 43 ‍percent for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Trump also improved his performance among young women, winning 42 percent of the vote share for ⁢women ‍aged 18 to 49 in 2024, up from 38 percent‌ in 2020 and 27 percent in 2016, while Harris won 56 percent.

In⁣ the 2024 election, ⁣Trump carried ⁣all seven key battleground states, including Arizona, where he ⁢defeated Harris by 187,000 votes. CNN ⁤reported, citing‍ an unnamed source, that Turning Point‌ USA’s efforts ⁢helped bring approximately 125,000 previously infrequent voters to the polls in Arizona, through voter transportation‌ and assistance with mail-in ballots.

trump‌ himself publicly acknowledged Kirk’s contributions, stating in an Oval Office ceremony, “And Charlie Kirk will tell you, TikTok helped, ‌but Charlie Kirk helped also.”

The Key to Kirk’s Success

Experts suggest‍ that the ⁣very aspects⁢ of⁢ Kirk’s persona and positions that drew criticism from some also fueled his appeal to MAGA‌ supporters.

“His mobilization power ‌was fundamentally rooted in controversy. It is⁣ precisely this controversy that made him highly visible online, allowing him to exert significant ideological influence,” Maly noted.

McCann⁣ added, “Kirk ⁣succeeded because he was charismatic, funny ⁣and tore apart wokeist ideology. Turning Point USA’s insurgent outreach to Gen Z perfectly complemented ⁣Trump’s populist pitch to the entire nation, which asserted that a coterie of insiders – the ‘enemy within’ – were betraying⁢ ordinary Americans.”

McCann ‌concluded, “People⁣ might disagree with kirk’s populist politics, but it is ‍indeed hard to deny that the⁢ Brainwashed ‍tour, magnified by its access to TikTok, addressed matters of ⁤substance” in the minds of many American ⁢voters.

California Bill Aims to Combat Foreign Interference in Sikh American Community

California Bill Aimed at Protecting Diaspora Communities Sparks Division Among Indian Americans

A California bill designed⁣ to counter transnational ‌repression is generating meaningful debate within‌ the Indian ⁢American community, with proponents arguing its a necessary safeguard and ⁣critics fearing it⁢ unfairly targets India. The legislation, currently under consideration ⁢in Sacramento, would authorize⁣ law enforcement training to recognize and respond to foreign government interference targeting individuals within the state.

The bill’s supporters, led by Democratic Assemblymember Ash Kalra, contend it’s⁤ a crucial step to⁤ protect diaspora communities⁢ from harassment, threats, and⁣ violence orchestrated by ⁤foreign⁤ governments. Harman Singh, of⁤ the Sikh Coalition, described the bill as addressing a critical need, stating, “California is becoming known as a top ‍transnational repression government.” he further asserted, “It’s very⁤ clear that the true target of this bill‍ is India and Indian Americans.”

Concerns have been raised⁤ regarding recent incidents of vandalism targeting Hindu temples, with pro-Khalistan slogans appearing at several sites. A key question for some is whether the bill will ⁣create a safe ⁣environment ⁢for‍ reporting such incidents. “How can the Hindu ⁣American community feel safe and⁣ secure ⁤reporting these incidents without fear of being accused ⁢of being a foreign agent ⁤or having law enforcement downplaying the ⁢vandalisms?” a concerned individual questioned.

However, Singh refuted ⁣claims ⁣that the bill is ‌divisive along religious lines, ⁢emphasizing a‌ broad coalition of support. ‌”The coalition of groups supporting includes both Sikh ⁢and Hindu organisations as well as muslim, Kashmiri, Iranian, South asian, immigrants’ rights, human rights, and law enforcement organisations,” he explained.

Some critics express apprehension that training law enforcement ⁢to identify transnational attacks could lead to biases against specific communities.singh dismissed these concerns,‍ stating the training “will be created by professionals ⁢within those organisations, rather than ‘a small group of activists,’ so this criticism is not based in‍ reality.”

Rohit ‍Chopra, a professor of interaction at Santa clara University, highlighted the broader context of foreign interference within the US. “Critics‌ of‌ other governments are all too routinely harassed, threatened, or‍ even assaulted by foreign governments or thier proxies within‍ the US,” he said.”Even if the bill⁣ has‌ some deterrent effect, which I believe it will, it will be well worth it.” ⁢He ⁤emphasized the bill’s non-restrictive⁣ scope, applying ⁤to interference ⁣from any⁤ nation.

Stanford University’s Hansen suggested that opposition to the bill‌ raises ⁢questions about potential motivations. ‌”When an organisation comes out strongly‍ against such a bill, ⁣it ⁢almost feels ⁤like a preemptive admission – as if they see themselves as being implicated by what the bill seeks to prevent,” Hansen observed.

For individuals like Cheema, a resident of Sacramento, ⁤the bill represents a vital step towards personal security. “I could be ‌the next victim if the law enforcement in my community is not able to recognize foreign interference,” Cheema stated. “It doesn’t matter who is indulging in it or which country, I would naturally like my police officers to be aware of the threats.” He concluded, ⁤”If any group feels threatened, then all⁤ sections ‌of society should⁤ make efforts ‍to protect ⁣their people. This reassures me that my voice is being heard.”

The‌ bill’s passage remains uncertain, but its debate underscores the growing ‍concerns surrounding⁤ transnational repression and the ‍challenges of protecting diaspora communities ⁤within the United States.
