Interview with Matěj Pulkrab on Sparta’s crucial match and the team’s evolution

Glasgow (from our reporter) – Sparta was losing 0:2, they needed to net a goal. In the 84th minute, coach Pavel Vrba sent Matěj Pulkrab to the pitch instead of Adam Hložek. In two minutes came one of the turning points not only of the match, but of the entire basic group.

Do you remember exactly what happened?

We had huge jams at the end. I personally had a great chance, the ball rebounded to me after goalkeeper Allan McGregor’s intervention, I headed it and to this day I still don’t understand that it didn’t end in a goal. I hit McGregor in the leg. It meant that we continued in the spring only in the Conference League.

You needed at least one goal.

Yes, we won 1:0 at home and if we lost by a goal, i.e. 1:2, we would be ahead of Rangers if the points were equal. Of course, we still had the final decisive match at home with Bröndby to come, but this was the key.

The game was heavily influenced by Filip Panák’s foul, after which Rangers’ second goal was scored.

Unfortunately, Pany made a mistake that stemmed from simply wanting to play football. It didn’t work out this time. Otherwise, we played an active game, only to concede this stupid goal soon after the start of the second half. We knew what we needed, we drove it up. Adam Karabec also had a great chance, but he didn’t make it.

Did you regret the loss a lot?

Of course. But I also remember how sorry I was that I didn’t start from the beginning.

Another important point of the match was the unexpected deployment of Dominik Holce in goal instead of Florin Nita, the decision was to be made only on the day of the match. How did the cabin feel about it?

I suspect that it was right after the 0:4 loss in Slovakia. I heard that Dominik might get a chance, there were definitely some indications. He stood in goal and I think he handled the game well. I think the question is more about the hitchhikers, if there was a communication problem, but from my point of view there was no problem. There’s no reason either. He trained and functioned normally with us. It wasn’t like someone completely new came along.

Matěj Pulkrab during an interview in Malta’s Grand Hotel Excelsior.

Sparta now faces another important duel in the fight for promotion, do you see any difference between the then and current team?

Certainly. At that time, we really played on individual qualities, the handwriting was not exactly given, we had absolutely nothing to lean on. Now, if Sparta plays a bad game, they still know what works for them, they have several game plans and tactics in place. We didn’t have that back then, so they have a much better chance on Thursday.

Did it occur to you recently when you beat Sparta with Boleslav, even though you didn’t actually start?

There is strength to be seen in Sparta. After losing the game here, they simply did not give up, they won the cup and the league with Bohemians. They still believe in the direction they have set. He just has to confirm it on the field, which he is mostly doing well so far.

Sima’s Controversial Statement: Is Sparta the Biggest Club in the Czech Republic?

He became a hit in Slavia and was bounced from it to engage in prestigious Western European leagues. The fans of the red and white team were therefore shocked when the Senegalese footballer Abdallah Sima allegedly declared that the biggest club in the Czech Republic is the rival from Sparta. The 22-year-old attacker then had to put everything into perspective.

“Sparta is the biggest club in the Czech Republic.” This sentence was supposed to be uttered by Sima in an interview with the Scottish newspaper Daily Record before Thursday’s Europa League duel, for which he will come to Letná in Prague with his current team, Glasgow Rangers.

The statement on the website of the Scottish newspaper, which was also taken over by the Czech media, caused an uproar. Even the Senegalese himself realized this. And in communication with Zdenek Houštecký, assistant coach of Slavia Jindřich Trpišovský, he clarified everything.

This is evidenced by a text conversation that Jakub Splavec, Slavia’s director of strategic communication, published on the social network X, formerly Twitter, with the consent of both.

It’s not always the way the media tells us. With the permission and request of both parties involved, I am publishing the conversation between Zdenek Houštecký and Abdallah Sima. pic.twitter.com/YQFFQf8RWX

— Jakub Splavec (@JSplavec_SKS) October 23, 2023

According to Splavek, the attacker also contacted his other acquaintances from the Vršovice club. “During his time here, he developed a close relationship not only with Houšťov, but also with other people from Slavia, to whom he immediately wrote,” declared the team official from Eden.

Splavec also said that Sima himself asked his club and the Scottish media for correction.

On the Daily Record website during Monday actually discovered the edited articlein which Sparta is already described in Sim’s direct speech as “a big club in the Czech Republic.”

Sima spent two years in Slavia, scored 11 goals in 24 league matches and won the championship with them. He transferred to Brighton in the summer of 2021, had loan spells at Stoke, Angers in France and has been at the Scottish club since this summer.

Even without the latest controversy, Glasgow Rangers’ trip to Prague will be a closely watched match.

The events surrounding the rematch of the round of 16 of the Europa League in the spring of 2021, when Scottish club midfielder Glen Kamara accused Sim’s then-teammate Ondřej Kúdela of racism, are vividly remembered.

Even Sparta’s double match with Rangers in the Europa League in autumn 2021 was accompanied by passions. After the match in Prague, coach Steven Gerrard criticized the children’s booing of Kamara, who was sent off.

The Scottish side was not willing to understand that the Finnish midfielder caused negative emotions not by the color of his skin, but by his behavior (not only) on the field. Top officials and politicians intervened in the case.

Slavia Prague Dominates with a 6-0 Win Over Sheriff Tiraspol in European League Group Match

Slavia footballers also won the second match in the European League group. They crushed Tiraspol 6-0 in Eden in front of nearly 18,000 spectators, followed up on the opening 2-0 win in Geneva over Servette and moved significantly closer to the promotion. Prague remained one goal short of their highest ever cup win.

The Czech vice-champion decided against the Moldovan champion right from the start, Mojmír Chytil and Igoh Ogbu scored in the opening seven minutes, and Munash Garanang scored an own goal before the break. After the change of sides, Ivan Schranz and David Douděra scored and Chytil scored for the second time in the game.

After two rounds without losing a point, Slavia lead the group by a score ahead of AS Roma, at whose stadium they will play in their next match on October 26. Three of the four teams will continue in the spring part of the cups. The first teams from each group will advance to the round of 16, while the second-placed teams will compete in the play-offs for advancement to the same stage with the third-placed clubs in the Champions League. Teams in third place will move to the lower European Conference League. The illustrious rivals partially avenged their elimination in the 2009 Champions League qualifiers when they were eliminated after 0-0 away and 1-1 home draws.

Prague coach Trpišovský put Chytila and Wall in the starting line-up, among others, and the move soon paid off. In the fourth minute, after a nice combination, the Norwegian midfielder put the ball in front of the goal from the side and Chytil opened the scoring from close range. The summer signing from Olomouc scored in the cups for the first time.

In the last three rounds of the Czech league, the team from Prague scored only two goals from penalties, and on Sunday in Teplice they came up empty-handed in a 0:0 draw, but today they had significantly better productivity. In the seventh minute, Ogbu ran onto Masopust’s cross from a free kick from the right side and headed the Slavists’ second attempt between the posts.

The winner of the last eight editions of the Moldovan league, who lost to Plzeň last year in the 3rd preliminary round of the Champions League after two 1:2 defeats, was visibly taken aback and practically did not threaten going forward. The home team clearly controlled the progress and increased the score in the 39th minute. Zafeiris fired into the box and his attempt was deflected past his own goalkeeper Garanang.

The Red and Whites continued their dominant performance even after the change of sides. In the 47th minute, Khtil put the ball through to Douděra and directed his pass into the open goal of Schranz. In the next 11 minutes, the people of Prague prevailed again. After a successful combination, Koval deflected Chytil’s shot and the catching Douděra scored his first goal in the cups.

Even the four substitutions in the 66th minute did not slow down the Slavists. One of the fresh players, Van Buren, did not convert a great chance yet, but in the 71st minute he directed Holeš’s attempt into the net. He caught it and rejoiced at the second goal of the match.

At the time, Prague were one goal away from equaling their record cup win from last July when they crushed St Joseph’s 7-0 at home. In the end, they could have repeated the result, but substitute Ogungbayi’s header in the set-up was knocked down by a defender. Sheriff suffered his heaviest defeat in UEFA competitions.

Slavia Prague Coach Looks to Start a New Era Against Sheriff after Champions League Heartbreak

Slavia Prague Coach Looks to Start a New Era Against Sheriff after Champions League Heartbreak

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 4, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

When, 14 years ago, the players of Slavia unexpectedly dropped out of the Champions League qualification with Tiraspol after conceding a goal in the set-up, their current coach Jindřich Trpišovský was sitting in the south stand in Eden, under which the decisive goal was scored.

He personally does not see Thursday’s Europa League match with Sheriff as a chance for revenge and wants to start a more successful era of mutual fights with the team. He also stated at the press conference that he does not consider the match to be crucial in the fight for promotion and that he is preparing changes in the lineup.

In the summer of 2009, after an away goalless draw in Tiraspol, the Slavists were leading 1-0 in the second leg in Eden and were aiming for promotion, but Šeriff equalized in the set-up and, thanks to the then rule about goals on the field, knocked out the opponents of the Prague favorite.

“At that time, I was going to work. So I probably had a morning shift so that I could go to football in the afternoon. At that time, I worked at Xaverova as a youth coach. (Defender) Matej Krajčík got me tickets, otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten here,” Trpišovský said.

“I was sitting as a fan in the south stand where the goal was scored at the time, so I was disappointed. I had it first hand, I remember the last minute well. But otherwise I had nothing to do with it. We want to start a new era and remember Tiraspol is different,” added the Slavist coach.

His charges won 2-0 against Servette in Geneva 14 days ago and they can take a big step towards promotion with a possible win over Tiraspol. “We don’t look at it like that, we take each match separately. Now we have Tiraspol at home and regardless of the order of the matches, we want to give the best possible performance and win. We won’t look at how it will affect the table,” Trpišovský said .

The Moldovan sovereign, who were eliminated in the 3rd preliminary round of the Champions League with Pilsen last year after two 1:2 defeats, lost to AS Rome 1:2 at the start of the group. “It is a completely different team than the one that played with Pilsen last year. There is only one player left in the lineup – stopper Kiki. The team is supplemented by South Americans and other foreign players. From what I saw against AS Rome, I would definitely not say that Tiraspol is the outsider of the group. I liked it very much, it was a balanced match,” noted Trpišovský.

“They are very interesting with the ball. The players are on the move a lot, they believe in themselves, they are good at combining. At the tip, they have two typologically different strong strikers who can hold the ball and finish well. In addition, Talal is a strong playmaker. He is very technical and confident team. I think that in the upcoming matches they will convince that they are not an outsider,” added Trpišovský.

His charges struggled in the final stages in previous matches and scored only two goals from penalties in the last three rounds of the Czech league. On Sunday in Teplice, they drew 0:0 and came up empty-handed for the first time since March.

“We need to improve our play in the box, we need to be efficient. The match will be challenging, we will want maximum activity from the players, a lot of run-up, pressing and passing. The players will rotate, we will want to vary during the match, have other options. We are clear about the lineup. Some there are always minor changes and there will be tomorrow as well. Maybe also with regard to the latest performances or current form,” said Trpišovský.

Tiraspol, who face Eden in two weeks’ time in Group G, were more dangerous early on and Mbekeli hit the post. But in the fourth minute of first-half regulation, Paredes scored his first goal since returning to Rome from Juventus in the summer. He was helped a lot by the run of one of the home defenders. At the same time, Paredes only came on the pitch during the first half instead of the injured Sanchez.

The Italian coach of the home team, Roberto Bordin, devised a successful tactic against his compatriots that led to an equaliser. But in the 65th minute, Lukaku broke through the home defense to seal the win. In a hectic finish, home team player Joao Paulo received a red card for protesting.

Liverpool are missing out on the Champions League for the first time since 2017 and it looked like they weren’t taking the lower competition too seriously. Manager Klopp has saved several mainstays including goalkeeper Alisson, Argentina’s world champion Mac Allister and attacking tandem Salah – Gakpo for Sunday’s match with West Ham.

Already in the 14th minute after a corner kick, Flecker delighted the Austrian spectators with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. After the change of sides, the Uruguayan Núnez equalized from the penalty spot and the Colombian Diaz took the lead for the visitors. The Egyptian Salah started only at the end and still managed to end a great solo with the third goal. LASK did not succeed even in the fifth match against a team from the Premier League.

Bayer Leverkusen confirmed the form that brought them to the top of the Bundesliga after four rounds. He did not spare the Swedish champion Häcken, who is playing in the group stage for the first time. Wirtz and the Moroccan Adli secured the lead for the visitors in the opening sixteen minutes, and Boniface and Hofmann sealed the win in the second half.

Similar to the German Cup, Matěj Kovář got an opportunity in goal for the home team, while he is only a substitute in the Bundesliga, and he kept his team up several times. Hložek came to the lawn for the last quarter of an hour.

Villarreal, the 2021 Europa League winners, changed their coach after a poor start to the season and new coach Pacheta had to sit out a 0-2 defeat at Panathinaikos Athens after a successful debut in the Spanish league. Ioannidis and Šporar took care of her.

Football European League – 1st round of groups: Group E: Saint-Gilloise – Toulouse 1:1 (0:1) Goals: 70. Amoura – 45. +3 Dalling from pen. ČK: 90.+4 Costa (Toulouse).LASK Linz – Liverpool 1:3 (1:0) Goals: 14. Flecker – 56. Núnez from pen., 63. Diaz, 88. Salah. Group F: Panathinaikos Athens – Villarreal 2:0 (1:0) Goals: 38. Aris Fights for Points and European Cup Glory Against Sparta: Špilevskij’s Determination and Confidence

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 21, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

“We didn’t come here as tourists who want to enjoy this great and beautiful city. We came to fight and show our fans good football. It is an important match, also in terms of experience and our development. We are the only Cypriot team in the group stage of the European Cups, so we also came here for points. Anything can happen. The final of the competition (next year) is played in Dublin, we want to get there, that’s clear,” joked Špilevskij.

Aris made its appearance in cup Europe for the first time only last season, when it was immediately eliminated in the 2nd preliminary round of the European Conference League with Neftči Baku. In the current season, however, they advanced over BATE Borisov in the 2nd preliminary round of the Champions League, then failed with Raków Čenstochová and were eliminated by Slovan Bratislava in the final qualification of the Europa League.

“Playing in the Europa League group is an amazing opportunity, we are looking forward to it. We will come across absolutely top teams. I had a lot of fun analyzing Sparta, they play at a high speed, actively, it’s real football, which I really like. You want to face such opponents every week,” Špilevskij said. The other teams in Group C are Glasgow Rangers and Betis Sevilla.

“We already have some experience from European cups in our legs, the one from last season was not good, but it was very important for our development. I feel that the guys are confident and not arrogant and that they can get out of difficult situations. Tomorrow we need to show an absolutely top performance, everyone must be mentally prepared and not be afraid,” said the 35-year-old Belarusian.

He singled out Sparta. “I like her style of play, it reminds me of the English league. Their coach (Brian Priske) is doing a fantastic job, I give him credit for that. I’m really looking forward to seeing how my players will do against Sparta,” said the former youth coach of Stuttgart and Leipzig.

Angelo Preciado during the match of the 8th round of the Fortuna league

“Both teams have a similar style, it could be a very fast and open game. I hope that will not be the case for us and that we will control the transition phase. We must not allow them to counter-attack because they have fast players, they push forward a lot. In attack, they use specific things, unexpected movements, which is not easy to defend against. We have taken everything into account and know their strengths and weaknesses. We will try to exploit their weaknesses. We need one hundred percent concentration and enthusiasm from all the players,” said Špilevskij.

He did not want to call Sparta the clear favorite of the match. “If I said that was the case, I would be greatly underestimating the quality of my players. Sparta is of course more experienced, it has a name in Europe. They are a few steps ahead of us. We are newcomers here, but we are hungry and we want to compete with such teams,” said the native of Minsk.

“Anyway, we can only win. Even if we lose points tomorrow, which we hope will not happen, it would not be a defeat for us. We are learning. I hate defeat, I can’t even describe how. But losses are an important part of the process for me and the whole club,” Špilevskij said.

Aris dominated the Cypriot league for the first time last season. “We fought a lot for this opportunity. We must not forget what football brings. Three years ago we played in the second league and tomorrow we will play in the Europa League against a strong opponent. Never question the dreamers because we are dangerous. We have nothing to lose. Let’s try to surprise Sparta tomorrow, it would certainly make them happy,” said Brazilian goalkeeper and captain Vaná Alves with a smile.
