Manchester, England – Ricky Hatton, โฃthe โขbeloved British boxing star whoโค captivated โฃa nation with his โaggressive style โคandโข devoted fanbase,โ hasโ died at the age of 46. The declaration prompted an โคoutpouring of grief from the โขboxing world and his hometown of Manchester.
Hatton rose to prominence with his stunning 2005 โฃvictory โover Kostyaโฃ Tszyuโ at the Manchester Arena, โคclaiming โthe โขIBF world super lightweight (light welterweight) title. Tszyu,a pound-for-pound great who had only lost twice previously, was forced to retire on his stoolโ in front of 22,000 fans. Hatton laterโ described it as his greatest win, markingโค the beginning of a period โคwhereโ he competed at the highest level of the sport, drawing โขthousands of British fans to his fights in America.
A hugely popular figure, Hatton’s career sawโ him โคchallenge Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007โค at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, suffering his first professional defeat. He fought again at the top level against Manny โPacquiao in 2009, losing inside two rounds, and afterward retired.
Hatton faced personal struggles after his retirement, battling weight gain, depression, and โคallegations of drug use. โขHe made โขa remarkable comeback โin 2012, losing to Vyacheslav Senchenko, โbut the returnโ itself was widely celebrated as a personal triumph.
Frank Warren, Hatton’s former manager, remembered him as aโ “superbly talented fighter who inspired a generation of young boxers and fans in a wayโ veryโฃ few had done before,” adding he would โ”rightly go down as oneโฃ of the modern โgreats ofโฃ this sport.”
Beyond boxing, Hatton was aโค lifelong supporter of manchester City football Club. In later years, โคHatton found successโค as a trainer, notably coaching Zhanat Zhakiyanov to a โขworld bantamweight title win in 2017. He had recently announced a return โto โthe ring later this year.
The British Boxing Board of Control โstated it was “very saddened”โข to hearโ of his passing.
