Vermont Receives $35M in Disaster Relief Funds

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 19, 2025

Vermont to Receive Over⁢ $650,000 in FEMA Disaster Recovery Funds

WASHINGTON – Vermont will receive $652,800 in disaster ⁢recovery‌ funding as part of a larger $35 million release announced by the Department of homeland Security (DHS). The funds, administered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), are earmarked⁣ for repairs to a building owned by‍ the Vermont department ⁢of Labor.

This⁣ project⁤ is one of 130 recovery initiatives supported by the funding release. DHS⁢ Assistant Secretary ⁣Tricia McLaughlin stated the disbursement demonstrates improvements in FEMA’s responsiveness, noting,”For decades,FEMA was mired in red tape and bureaucracy, slowing its response to ⁣natural disasters…this new funding proves that Secretary⁣ Noem’s efforts to⁤ remake⁤ the agency into a fast, responsive disaster relief‌ enterprise are working.”

The funding comes after a review of FEMA ⁤initiated by an executive order from the trump administration, following previous discussions about potential meaningful changes to the agency.

Vermont has recently relied on ⁣FEMA‍ assistance to recover ⁢from severe flooding events. Both in 2023 and 2024, ⁣the state received reimbursements to towns for ⁣flood damage. In July 2024, ⁤Governor Phil Scott requested a major disaster ⁣declaration for localized flooding in the Northeast Kingdom ⁣following events on July 10th, reporting over $1.8 million in ⁢damages. Approval of this request from the Trump administration is still pending.

Trump’s Dismantling of Disability Protections in Homeland Security

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor September 16, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

Trump ⁢Governance Dismantled Civil Rights Oversight,⁢ Targeted Disability Protections, Former DHS ‌official Reveals

WASHINGTON D.C. ⁣ – A former Department ‍of Homeland Security (DHS) official‌ alleges the Trump administration⁢ systematically dismantled internal ⁤civil rights mechanisms, including offices‍ dedicated to oversight of immigration detention and U.S. citizenship and Immigration Services, ‍as part ⁣of a broader effort to eliminate perceived “internal adversaries.” The revelations,‌ stemming from‍ an interview ⁤with former DHS ⁢official Maria Fernandez, ⁣coincide with⁣ a documented pattern of disparaging remarks made by Donald Trump regarding people with disabilities.

Fernandez, who worked in ⁢the Office of Civil Rights and Civil⁤ Liberties (CRCL) within DHS,was informed in ⁢late March ⁤that her position was being eliminated. The entire office,⁣ mandated ⁤by the department’s founding statute, was deemed “non-essential or not legally mandated” by the ⁤administration, despite its crucial role in safeguarding civil liberties. Fernandez was placed on paid administrative leave and terminated at the end of May.

The dismantling of ‍CRCL⁤ occurred amidst broader layoffs initiated by the Department of Government Efficiency. Though, Fernandez’s account suggests a deliberate targeting of ⁣offices focused on oversight and ⁣accountability. A DHS spokesperson reportedly referred to the eliminated⁢ offices ‍- including those overseeing immigration ⁤detention – as “internal adversaries.”

this action ‌aligns‍ with a ⁣history of publicly documented instances of Trump’s dismissive and, at times, hostile attitude toward individuals with disabilities. At a ⁢2015 campaign‍ rally, he openly mocked the hand movements of a disabled New York Times ⁢reporter. During his first term, aides ⁢reported he expressed reluctance to appear with military amputees, stating it “doesn’t look good for me.”

Perhaps most disturbingly, a 2020 memoir ⁢by Trump’s nephew, who has a disabled son, alleges⁣ the former President made the chilling statement, regarding people with serious disabilities: “The shape they’re in, all‍ the expenses, maybe those kinds ⁢of people ‍should just die.”

The pattern continued after his second inauguration, with‍ Trump ⁢reportedly blaming ⁢President Biden’s recruitment of⁤ “individuals with ‘severe intellectual’ disabilities” as a contributing factor to an aircraft collision over the Potomac River in⁣ 2024,wich tragically resulted in ⁣sixty-seven fatalities.

Fernandez, initially relieved by the layoff given the overall chaos of the administration, now faces the challenge of securing new employment to support her family, including her husband, ‌who is a green card holder working irregular⁤ freelance jobs, and ⁤their ⁢two ⁢children. ⁢She expressed a desire to continue “good work” that “moves the world‍ forward,” but⁣ acknowledges the difficulty‌ of finding such⁢ a role outside the public sector, given her career focus.

The elimination of CRCL and the documented ⁣history of Trump’s ⁤rhetoric raise serious concerns about the⁢ erosion of disability rights protections during ‌his presidency and ‌the potential long-term consequences for vulnerable populations. The incident underscores the importance of robust civil rights oversight within government agencies and the need for continued advocacy to ensure the protection of all citizens.

Judge Orders U.S. to Prevent Deportations to Ghana

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 14, 2025

Judge Accuses trump Administration of “end-Run”⁤ Around Torture Protections ‍in Migrant Deportations to Ghana

Washington D.C. – A federal ⁢judge sharply criticized the Trump ‌administration Saturday, accusing it of attempting to circumvent legal obligations to protect individuals fleeing ‌persecution and torture. The⁤ rebuke ⁢came following the recent ‌deportation of a group of African migrants to Ghana, with some now facing imminent return to their home ‍countries ‍despite existing U.S. court orders protecting them from such deportation.

U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan demanded the U.S. government⁢ detail, by 9 p.m. EST Saturday, the steps being taken to prevent the deportees from ‍being sent back to nations where they fear credible persecution or torture.

The case centers around the deportation earlier this month of over a dozen non-Ghanaian nationals – ⁢including citizens of Gambia and Nigeria – to Ghana. This action makes Ghana the latest nation to accept ⁤so-called “third-country deportations”‌ requested by the outgoing Trump administration. While the Ghanaian government has confirmed the deportations, the legal ramifications are now under intense⁢ scrutiny.

Attorneys representing the deportees allege they‍ are being held in “squalid conditions” within an open-air‌ detention facility⁢ in Ghana,⁤ guarded by‌ armed military personnel. More alarmingly, legal filings indicate ⁣that four of the deportees have been informed they will be returned to their countries of origin as early as‍ Monday, directly contravening⁣ existing orders from U.S.‍ immigration judges who previously barred their deportation due ⁤to substantiated fears of persecution or torture. One individual from Gambia,‌ identified as bisexual by‍ legal‌ counsel, has already been repatriated, according to the lawsuit.

These deportees are protected under both the United Nations Convention Against Torture and ⁢a provision of U.S. immigration law known as withholding of removal. While these protections don’t prevent deportation altogether, they do prohibit‍ the U.S. ‍from sending individuals to countries where they face a genuine risk⁣ of ⁤harm. ⁣The ‍administration’s strategy appears to exploit a loophole, transferring individuals to third-party nations with the expectation ⁤they won’t be sent onward ‌to face persecution.

During⁣ Saturday’s ⁤hearing, the Justice Department lawyer representing the government conceded⁤ that Ghana intends to return the deportees to their native countries, and acknowledged the potential violation of diplomatic assurances allegedly given by Ghana ⁤promising not to send the migrants⁣ to unsafe ‌locations. However, the attorney⁣ argued the U.S.has no authority to dictate Ghana’s actions.

Judge Chutkan‌ expressed visible frustration with this position, labeling it “disingenuous.” ⁣She questioned whether the U.S.government anticipated this outcome and suggested the deportations‌ were a purposeful attempt to bypass established legal protections. She proposed potential solutions, including ⁤retrieving the⁤ deportees ⁣and returning them to the U.S., transferring them ⁤to a safe third country, or formally notifying Ghana of its breach of agreement.

“How’s this⁣ not⁢ a violation of your obligation?” Chutkan pressed the Justice Department attorney.

Despite her concerns, Judge Chutkan acknowledged the limitations of her authority, noting her “hands might potentially be ‌tied” as the deportees are ‍currently outside U.S. jurisdiction. She also conceded that any order compelling action would likely be ⁢stayed by‍ the Supreme⁣ Court.

Trump’s National Guard Deployment in LA: Costs and Legal Battles

by David Harrison – Chief Editor September 13, 2025
written by David Harrison – Chief Editor

Federal Deployment of Troops to Los Angeles Reaches $118 Million, California Officials Say

Los‍ Angeles, CA – A recent analysis from⁤ California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office reveals the deployment of National⁢ guard troops and U.S. Marines‌ to Los Angeles‍ this past june has cost taxpayers an‍ estimated $118 million, sparking renewed conflict with the ‌federal government. The deployment, initiated under the Trump administration, remains a point of contention, with California officials arguing it was an illegal overreach of ⁢federal power.

The ⁤dispute began following comments made by former‍ President Trump regarding unrest in California, characterizing the situation as violent and criticizing Governor Newsom’s handling of it. In response, Trump ‍authorized the ⁤deployment of both National Guard personnel and Marines.

Governor Newsom and California Attorney ⁤General Rob Bonta subsequently ‍filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the⁤ deployment. bonta stated the action “jumped ⁣from 0 to 60, bypassing law enforcement expertise and ⁢evaluation…threw caution to the wind and ⁣sidelined strategy in an unnecessary‍ and inflammatory ⁣escalation that only further spurred unrest.”

A federal court last Tuesday granted California’s injunction, blocking what the state argues was “Trump’s use of the U.S. military as a domestic police force.” The cost analysis was made possible by a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the governor’s office, seeking⁣ all records related to expenses incurred⁣ since June 7th for activating the ‍Marines and federalizing the National Guard.

The $118 million in costs breaks down as follows:

* $71 million for food and basic necessities
*‌ $37 million in payroll
* More than $4 million in logistics⁤ supplies
* ‌ $3.5 million in⁣ travel expenses
* $1.5 million in demobilization costs

Governor newsom released a statement ⁢criticizing the⁣ expenditure, saying, “Let us not⁤ forget what this political⁢ theater is costing us all – millions of taxpayer dollars down the⁢ drain, an atrophy to the ‍readiness of guards members across the‍ nation and ⁤unnecessary hardships to the families supporting those⁣ troops. Talk about waste, fraud, and abuse. We ask other states to do the math themselves.”

The legal battle and financial implications of the deployment are ongoing, raising questions about the appropriate use⁢ of federal military resources within state jurisdictions.

Chicago Protest: Trump’s Immigration Crackdown Sparks Resistance

Chicago Protestors March Against Increased ‍ICE Operations

CHICAGO (CBS News) – Hundreds of protestors took to⁣ the streets of downtown Chicago Tuesday, demonstrating against recent Immigration adn ‌Customs Enforcement⁣ (ICE) operations ⁢and⁣ President Donald Trump‘s‍ immigration policies. The rally and march, organized by groups including the U.S. Palestinian Community network and⁣ the Immigrants’ Rights Working Commitee, aimed to both acknowledge the ‌increased ICE presence in‍ the city and ‍educate immigrant communities about⁣ thier rights.

The exhibition comes as ICE has intensified enforcement efforts ⁣in Chicago, sparking fear‍ and frustration⁢ among residents. While city officials report a decrease ⁣in crime, protestors argue the federal government’s actions are creating a climate of ‍fear and tearing families apart. This ‍protest followed a similar demonstration⁣ held ⁤on saturday, but organizers felt a renewed rally⁣ was necesary with ICE operations already ⁤underway.

“Before, there was only the looming threat of the federal government ⁤coming over here and ⁤carrying ICE raids. Now ‌we’ve seen the‌ actuality of it and we’ve⁣ seen ⁤families being torn apart,” ⁢said Omar Flores with the Immigrants’ Rights Working Committee.

The ⁣march began outside‌ Grant Park and proceeded⁢ past Trump Tower,‌ circling the Loop before returning down State Street and passing the ICE Chicago field office on Ida B Wells. Protestors voiced strong opposition to the President’s policies.

“I’m incensed by what the president ‌of the‍ United States ⁤is doing‍ to our city and our country,” ⁢stated Nancy Green, ⁤a protest ⁢participant.

Organizers reported success in ‍their “rapid response” efforts, providing facts about ‌rights to those affected by the ICE⁢ operations. Husam Marajda, a member of the U.S.‌ Palestinian Community Network, suggested the President’s actions are politically motivated. “He did the same thing in L.A.⁣ and ⁣D.C., but Chicago is different, and we’re going to hold it⁤ together and show a lot ‍of resistance,” Marajda said.

Ana Guajardo ‍with Workers Center emphasized the real-world impact of the operations, stating, “We have seen it ⁤in the Southeast Side of Chicago and the south suburbs.”

Organizers have pledged to continue holding rallies and marches as long as president Trump continues to target ‍Chicago‍ with‍ increased ‌enforcement.

Chicago ICE Operation: ‘Midway Blitz’ Intensifies Immigration Enforcement

Operation ⁣Midway Blitz: ICE Enforcement Operations underway in Chicago

CHICAGO – U.S. ⁢Immigration ⁣and Customs Enforcement (ICE) launched‍ “Operation Midway Blitz”⁣ in Chicago on Monday, substantially increasing immigration enforcement efforts in the city and surrounding areas. The Department of ⁢Homeland Security ⁢(DHS) announced the⁣ operation, stating it will⁤ “target the criminal illegal aliens who‌ flocked to Chicago and Illinois.” DHS attributes the need ⁣for increased enforcement to Chicago and Illinois’ sanctuary laws, which ‍limit cooperation between local and state law enforcement and ICE agents. The⁢ operation follows⁣ weeks after the‌ Trump administration initially signaled plans to escalate ICE activity ⁢in Chicago.DHS has not specified the duration of Operation Midway Blitz. The department stated the mission is ⁤intended to honor ‌Katie Abraham, a Chicago woman killed in a drunk driving⁣ hit-and-run crash in Urbana, Illinois, in January. The driver involved was an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson stated the city received no prior notification of the enhanced immigration enforcement. ⁢Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed similar concerns on X.com, stating, “Once again, this isn’t about fighting crime. That requires support and coordination – yet we’ve experienced⁣ nothing like that over the past several weeks.”

Immigrant rights advocates and local activists have organized protests at ICE‍ facilities in ‍the Chicago⁢ suburbs since last week, with additional demonstrations planned as the operation ⁣continues. Community organizations are actively distributing information regarding residents’ rights. The City of Chicago provides “Know Your Rights” guides in both English and⁢ Spanish, available at: https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/mayor/Office%20of%20New%20Americans/PDFs/ShortenedResourceGuide-English.pdf and https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/mayor/Office%20of%20New%20Americans/PDFs/ShortenedResourceGuide-Spanish.pdf.
